| Mufti welcomes PM’s vision of cooperation | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Anantnag, Dec14: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said the faith reposed by the people of Jammu and Kashmir in peaceful and democratic means for the resolution of their problems, necessitates concerted reciprocal initiatives from the Government of India to address their just concerns and aspirations. "The renewed desire for dignified peace, reconciliation and stability emanating from Jammu and Kashmir needs to be reciprocated and consolidated through a genuine and sustained confidence building process to heal the physical, psychological and emotional wounds inflicted on the people," Sayeed said while addressing election rallies in Dooru and Homshalibugh constituencies here today. "The scenario should not make us complacent about the problem having disappeared without addressing it," he said. Welcoming the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's assertion at Shangus today, that India was committed to resolving the Kashmir issue through dialogue and Self-Rule for the State could be discussed, Sayeed described it an appropriate and fitting response to the mature, civilized and non-violent expression of aspirations by the people of the State. He said Dr Singh's reiteration that his Government is committed to carry forward and expand the process of cross-LoC cooperation and trade in J&K, would help create a new space for reconciliation in the region. "Indo-Pak cooperation is the key to resolving the region's problems and Kashmir would have a pivotal role in cementing those relations," he said and called upon the civil society in both the countries to respond to the emerging challenging situation so that the peace process is put back on track. "The culmination of the ongoing democratic process in the State, encouraging by all standards, should pave the way for initiating a sincere and serious wide-ranging dialogue, with all shades of the public opinion to evolve a broad-based consensus on the peaceful resolution of the State's problems," Sayeed said. Expressing shock and anguish over the incident of firing on unarmed protesters at Koil, Pulwama yesterday, Sayeed said to protest and stage peaceful demonstrations is the democratic right of the people and the State and the Central Government must make the security forces personnel accountable for such reprehensible and unwarranted actions resulting in innocent deaths. "Such repressive tactics is uncalled for and must end forthwith," he cautioned and also condemned the recurrent attacks on media-persons performing their professional duties. |
