| Ah! Those 60 years | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 14: As “60 years” becomes a clichéd buzzword of campaign in Jammu region, particularly in districts of Jammu, Udhampur, Samba and Kathua, the country’s famous television star too has an idea of what is selling best in the region. These days attend any public meeting anywhere in the region, whether it is addressed by Congress leaders, those from BJP or a wide array of smaller parties or independents, one gets to hear a common catchphrase –“60 years”. Newspaper reports, television promos, banner, posters and slogans all revolve around “60 years”. BJP says that it is out to undo the “60 years” of discrimination against Jammu and the Congress says that their government did in two and half years which no previous government could do in past 60 years. Much interesting comparison is yet to follow -60 days versus 60 years. Those (there is was hardly any exception) who waged the two month long agitation on Amarnath land row claim that brought to Jammu (the honour and dignity) in 60 days what people waited for 60 years. Listen to her. The iconoclastic Indian woman who glamorized the dramatized the Saas-Bahu operas in every Indian living room for eight years, too has knowledge of those “60 years” and those “60 days” Samriti Irani, known across the country as Tulsi for her role in “Kyun Ki Saas Bi Kabhi Bahu Thi” was today in the town to, what BJP says, salute the people who displayed unique unity during the recent agitation in which over a dozen youth sacrificed their lives. The BJP, negative catalyst of land row agitation, is all gaga to consolidate its benefits. So, touching the line given to her by the party, Tulsi says, “the time has now when the same unity is need to be repeated in the coming elections to end the 60 year of discrimination meted out to them”. At a public meeting in border township of Khour –which elected Tara Chand of Congress in 1996 and 2002 –the Indian Bahu throws a phrase ‘Jammu Ek to Jeete Jammu’, and says that the people of the area will get a golden chance to write their future on December 24. She said how unfortunate it is that the Jammu province has more population, people here pay more taxes but they get fewer jobs, less share in developmental activity and so on. This decadal fever in the region was brought first by the Congress in 2002 when its campaigned for a Chief Minister for Jammu and from Jammu –first time in 45 years. The years continued to add till 2007 but ironically since then the calander is not changing –it is struck at 60 years. |
