In politics today's enemy is tomorrow's friend
12/16/2008 9:26:45 PM

NIRBHAY JAMMUAL
It is vote politics.Others call it politics of garnering voters' support. If one says it one is not to be blamed.Politicians have been friends at one time and sworm enemies the other time.Till the fall of the Azad led Government the coalition partners would take the credit for all the plus points of the Government notwithtading the fact that towards the closing period of the Congress-PDP honeymoon Azad would not hesitate claiming better credit for the all round progress of the state.Mufti Mohd.Sayeed too would react by claiming that during the three years he headed the Government seeds for peace and for boli instead of goli had been sown in the state. Before the fall of the Azad led Government Ghulam Nabi Azad had been trying to persuade the Congress high command on forging ties with the National Conference instead of the PDP.His aim was to run the Government on his terms through the alliance with the National Conference. He had come to believe that the the National Conference was a lesser evil than the PDP.But the Congress high command did not accept the suggestion possibly on the plea that for the Government of India the Mufti was the best bet vis-a-vis the Kashmir issue.
Soon after the election schedule was announced the leaders of the three mainstream political parties leave no stone unnturned in berating one another.Even the Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh, referred obliquely to the role of the PDP while addressing an election rally in Jammu the other day.He said that the Congress led Government had been instrumental in carrying out series of development works and it would have done more had not it was forced to resign. What factors forced Ghulam Nabi Azad to resign instead of facing the vote of confidence on the floor of the Assembly are no longer secret. The Prime Minister knew it full well and hence he made a reference to it.When you listen to the speeches of the Congress leaders in the election rallies you believe that the PDP has been the main political villain. When you listen to the speeches of the PDP leaders you have no other alternative but to feel convinced that the Congress and the National Conference have ruined Jammu and Kashmir. If you listen to the speeches of the National Conference leaders you would believe that the mother of all political and economic problems in the state are none but the Congress and the PDP.It is war of words among the leaders belonging to the National Conference, the Congress and the PDP.
The wordy duels are not limited to the leaders of these parties. Those belonging to the BJP and the Panthers Party try to convince the voters that whatever political and economic malady the state is faced with is the handiwork of the Congress, the PDP and the National Conference. If you blame the voters for being confused you are not correct because the war of words have more impact on the mind of the voters than the strike of the sword. And the same voters deserve praise for their courage they have demonstrated by defying the poll boycott call given by the separatists. These voters have walked to the polling booths to see the right person elected even when they know that the candidates may not be able to fulfill their promises. They know that the diatribe exercise by political leaders and contesting candidates is part of the game of wooing voters. They know that in politics there is nothing like permanent foes and friends. In case the polling throws up a hung Assembly the Congress would not mind forming a coalition Government either with the PDP or the National Conference. If there is a semblance of permanancy in friendship or animosity it is between the PDP and the Nationl Conference. This animosity is not the result of political ideology but the outcome of ego problem between the Muftis and the Abdullahs.
