12/16/2008 9:28:08 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 16: Congress has sought a decisive mandate for the party to enable it to give a final push to its agenda of peace, stability, development, good governance and massive infrastructure development in the state and said that the trends emerging from the first five phases of polling indicate that the people have reposed faith on the pro-people agenda of the party.
Addressing largely attended gatherings in the outskirts of Jammu city to garner support for the party candidates, senior congress leader and former MP, Janak Raj Gupta hoped that in the next two phases people will come out in larger numbers and exercise their riht of franchise in favour of the party that has been responsible for bringing state back on the rails despite hurdles created by the coalition partner during the last two years of the Azad led government.
Criticizing NC of raising emotive slogans and making hollow promises, Gupta said that the role of the NC is known to every body who at one time sought votes on ‘plebiscite’ and some time on ‘greater autonomy’ and added that after having failed to lure the electorate started making hollow promises to hoodwink the electorate. The people are conscious enough to differentiate between the friends and foes; he added and hoped that the people would not fall in their trap again.
Describing PDP and opportunist and self centered party, the congress leader said that right from day one Azad took over as chief minister, as per power sharing agreement reached between the two parties after 2002 elections, the PDP started creating hurdles and finally withdrew support. ‘It is not an opportunism then what it is’, he asked? Gupta said that Congress is a primer party and acceptable to the people all across the country and added that its role during the freedom movement is not hidden from anybody.
He dwelt at length about the achievements of the Azad led government and pointed out that had the PDP not withdrawn support, the government would have last to its full terms and ensured accomplishment of the agenda set before the people. However, he assured, that it voted back to power, the Congress government would usher in a new era of peace and prosperity besides, ensuring balanced and equitable growth of all the regions and areas of the state as were witnessed during the last 32 months of its rule.
Earlier, at a meeting Janak Raj Gupta, B R Kundal and Prof. Hari Om discussed the party’s strategy for the last two phases of polling and impressed upon the rank and file of the party to fan out in their respective areas for seeking votes for the party and making the electorate aware of party’s policies and programs besides distributing the pamphlets and hand bills depicting Azad led government’s achievements.
Several deputations from Chakrohi, Kirpind, Kotli Mian Fateh and Ban Sultan called on the Congress leaders at the party’s election office here today and extending support to the Congress party.
In the meantime, Abdul Gani Kohli accompanied by Ch. Ghulam Rasool and other senior party activists visited several areas including Nagrota, Hiranagar, Marh, Belicharna, Bathindi, Sidhra and Suchetgarh and held public rallies in support of the party candidates and also launched door to door campaigning in these areas appealing electorate to vote for the Congress party and its candidates at Khanpur in Nagrota constituency, a large number of women workers of NC wing joined Congress party and assured their full support of the party candidates.
