Jammu, Sept 30: Department of Students Welfare, Cluster University of Jammu (CLUJ), organized Intra University Debate, Painting and Essay Writing Contests to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav under the patronage of Prof. Bechan Lal, Vice Chancellor, CLUJ.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Father of Nation and also as International Day of Non –Violence. 153rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated to pay tribute and honour the ideology, dedication and sacrifice of Mahatma Gandhi. 54 students of PG Schools and Constituent Colleges participated in the Intra University Contests and articulated Gandhi Ji’s ideology and contributon towards India’s freedom struggle.
The topic of the Debate Competition was Are Gandhian Ideals of Truth and Non- Violence relevant today? where in students presented their diverse views in a vehement manner.The students aslo showcased their creative insights in the Painting Contest on the Theme : World of Mahatma with Subthemes: Satyagraha, Swachh Bharat, Unity in Diversity, Gandhi Portrait, Philosophy of three Monkeys, Aatma Nirbhar Bharat. In the Essay Writing Competition on “Relevance of Gandhian Philosophy in the 21st Century, students expressed their ideas highlighting the significance of Gandhian gospels of Truth and Non-violence in the modern era.
The Programme commenced with a Gandhi Bhajan. Dr. Twinkle Suri, Dean Students Welfare welcomed the guests and advocated the need to propagate Gandhian Philosophy of Truth & Non- Violence amongst the young learners for a harmonious social order. She exhorted that Gandhi Ji devoted his entire life relentlessly towards spreading the message of peace, harmony, equality and brotherhood.
The Prize distribution Ceremony was graced by Prof. Bechan Lal, Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Jammu . In his address, he stressed that Gandhi Ji lived a life of simplicity and we should honor his principles and contribution towards the nation. He reiterated that the relevance of gandhian philosophy was not limited to freedom struggle but his ideology of peace and brotherhood is paramount in the present times for a productive and progressive civilization.
He exhorted the young learners to read and understand the teachings of Sri Aurobindo, which focus on holistic development of mind, body and soul and that education should inculcate in a student moral values, humanity and character building.
He further added that Gandhi was a keen observer of cleanliness, thus they should come forward and contribute towards Swacch Bharat Abhiyan by initiating a cleanliness drive in their locales thereby spreading awareness and encouraging people to keep their surroundings clean.
Anil Kumar Sharma from GGM Science College , Alvin Singh from School of Humanities and Liberal Arts and Sonia Singh from Govt. College of Education bagged Ist , 2nd,and 3rd prizes in Debate Competition judged by Dr. Shehnaz Qadri (MAM College), Dr. Niharika Panda (School of Teacher Education), Dr. Jeet Singh (School of Humanities and Liberal Arts). Palkin from MAM College, Manisha Kumari and Sunaina Kapoor both from Govt. College of Education secured Ist , 2nd,and 3rd prizes in Painting Competition adjudicated by Dr. Nazia Rasool (School of Sciences), Dr. Sudesh Kumar (MAM College), Dr. Shubhra Jamwal (GCOE). Ojasvi Dubey from GCW Gandhi Nagar, Mitali Gandotra from School of Humanities and Liberal Arts and Ashpreet Kour Sudan from GCW Gandhi Nagar bagged Ist , 2nd,and 3rd prizes in Essay Writing Competition adjudicated by Dr. Indu Sharma (School of Humanities and liberal Arts ), Dr. Nazia Choudhary (MAM College), Dr. Neetu Kumari (School of Social Sciences).
The programme was graced by Dr. Jatinder Khajuria, Registrar, Deans of Faculties and Principals of Constituent Colleges, Coordinators , Faculty from PG Schools and Constituent Colleges, Cultural Coordinator and Assistant Deans. Ms. Janvi anchored the proceedings of the programme and formal vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Banpreet Kour, Associate Dean, CLUJ.
