| KP migrant voters turn out in large numbers | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec17- There was great enthusiasm among the members of displaced Kashmiri Pandits who came out in large numbers to exercise their vote. Wearing new attires, men and women, participated in today’s polling for nine constituencies in Anantnag and Pulwama districts .The Pandit voters lined up out side nine polling booths which had been specially set up for the migrants in Jammu, Nagrota and Udhampur. While one each polling booth had been set up in Nagrota and Udhampur the remaining seven stations had been established in the Jammu city. In each polling booth nine rooms were set up for enabling migrants to vote for nine constituencies in Anantnag and Kulgam districts where polling ended today. Moderate to heavy polling was recorded from the migrants. The polling booth at Muthi camp witnessed heavy turnout of migrant voters. Number of migrant voters, settled in Bangalore and Mumbai, had traveled to Jammu to cast their votes. Nana Ji Raina and his wife had come from Bangalore, where they are serving, to Jammu for casting their votes. The couple is original residents of Nanil village in Bijebehara constituency. Similarly, Ashok Raina and his family members had come from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh to cast their votes. He hails from Anantnag constituency. After casting their votes, Ashok Raina, a senior journalist, and his family members left for Kangra. Over 15 candidates belonging to the displaced community are in the poll fray from various constituencies in the Kashmir valley. It is for the first time since 1996 that such a large number of Pandit candidates, including two women, are contesting the election. Reports said that the only reason for Pandits to jump in the poll fray was that they expected very poor polling in the valley which could give a chance to some of them to get elected to the Assembly as had been the case with Raman Mattoo, who won the Habba Kadal seat in 2002. But the heavy turnout of voters in the valley may not allow a single Pandit candidate to stage a win.
