Awareness programme held on International day for disaster reduction

JAMMU, Oct 13: One day awareness cum demonstration programme on International Day for disaster reduction was celebrated today and organised jointly by Acharya Shri Chander College of Nursing Education Jammu and varsity's Nations Development Association (NDA) affiliated to NYKS under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, and The main propel of this programme was to create awareness within the Society for coordinating and implementing measures which are necessary for prevention of danger or threat & for mitigation or reduction of risk of any disaster or its severity or consequences, preparedness to deal with any disaster; prompt response to any threatening disaster situation, assessing the severity or magnitude of effects of any disaster and lastly evacuation, rescue and relief.
Dr Pavan Malhotra, Director Principal, Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences and Hospital Sidhra Jammu (ASCOMS) on Wednesday the 12th of Oct, 2022 inaugurated the one-day awareness cum training programme on 'Engaging Youth & Adolescents in Disaster management'. In his presidential address, Director Principal ASCOMS Jammu emphasized that no research will be able to bring any change if it doesn't reach the society. He further stated that science needs to be linked to society in all respects to develop impactful policies and programmes related to disaster management. He also expressed to engage the Nursing students of College & Nursing staff in disaster management programmes for greater consciousness within the society.
Anita Pawar, Dy. SP, Dy. Controller Civil Defence, Jammu also emphasized the need to channelize the efforts of the students for creating an environment to inculcate the awareness among the masses for assessing the effects of disaster and rescue and relief thereof.
Principal, Acharya Shri Chander College of Nursing Education, Sidhra, Jammu, Dr Indra Moza, who was a guest of honour, delivered the keynote address, listing therein a host of emerging concerns vis-à-vis climate change.
She asserted that for developing the "culture of disaster preparedness" among people across the Indian Himalayan Region for mitigation or reduction of risk of any disaster or its severity or consequences. She also asserted that Shri Sushil Singh Charak Chief Functionary youth can drive a big change by raising awareness on creating a "disaster-conscious society" for prompt response to any threatening disaster situation.
Charak said that 1.4 billion people get water from the Himalayas which is host to more than 18,000 glaciers and this calls upon the Himalayan States to create a consortium on climate change to formulate better policies on mitigation and also to seek adequate funding for the same.
Permjit Kumar Chief Warden Civil Defence Jammu spoke about the importance of the theme and College initiatives in this regard. Shikha Bhandari Assistant Professor ASCCONE, Rashmita Sharma Assistant Matron cum Nursing Tutor, ASCCONE, Slonee Raina Assistant Matron cum Nursing Tutor, ASCCONE and Amarjeet Singh Assistant Matron cum Nursing Tutor ASCCONE, Sidhra and Bindia Thakuri presented the documentary on the theme which was given a huge ovation.
Inter - Quiz competition was also held between GNM and BSC Nursing students in which students performed and their performances were highly appreciated. Mohd. Saqib and Anamika Digra stood first in the quiz competition. Appreciation certificates and mementos were distributed among the participating students by Director Principal Dr. Pavan Malhotra, Principal ASCCONE Dr. Indra Moza Vice-Principal Prof. Davinder Kour and Mr. Sushil Singh Charak , Chief Functionary Nations Development Association (NDA).
