Maharaja, a visionary leader
10/22/2022 12:18:16 AM

The Accession Day is celebrated every year on October 26 to commemorate the signing of Instrument of Accession by Maharaja Hari Singh at Amar Palace in Jammu.
It was on October 26, 1947 when Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to join the former independent princely state of J&K with the Union of India. In fact the Maharaja in April 1947 had decided that he would accede to India if it was not possible to stay independent.
But Pakistan tried to invade Jammu and Kashmir by sending tribal raiders and its action divided the erstwhile state into Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and Jammu and Kashmir, a scenario that continues till date.
Kashmir will never forget October 22, 1947, as on that day hell broke out lose when 6000 to 7000 Pakistani raiders, backed by the Pakistan army, crossed the Neelam River and began looting, plundering, raping, kidnapping and killing thousands of innocents, all with the intention of capturing Kashmir under the code name of Operation Gulmarg. Pakistan’s 7 Infantry Division was located close by seeking to exploit the success achieved by its raiders. The target was to capture all territory up to the Banihal Pass.
By the end of the war, over 35,000 Kashmiris from all religions were killed, and thousands were kidnapped and taken to western Pakistan to be sold as slaves.
The raiders continued to wreak havoc till Indian Army soldiers arrived and pushed them back. Even after 70-years, Pakistan has not changed its breeding terrorists and is sending them into J&K to carry out the bloodshed. The terrorists sent by Pakistan have only one job i.e. to create fear and terror. Despite fighting the proxy war for three decades Pakistan has not been able to even a snatch an inch of land from India. The terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir is on its last legs as the security forces have succeeded in their mission to defeat terror.
After accession, the Indian part of J&K has witnessed massive progress and development while the area under Pakistani occupation was bifurcated into two - PoK and the ‘Northern Areas,’ known as Gilgit-Baltistan. Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and has been in turmoil for the past seven decades.
Maharaja Hari Singh had a vision. Time has proven that his decision to merge J&K with India was a correct move.
