Visionary Maharaja Saved Kashmir
10/27/2022 11:37:13 PM

As Jammu and Kashmir celebrated Accession Day on October 26, the people remembered the sacrifices made by the Indian Army and the locals to prevent the tribal raiders from succeeding in the nefarious plan to capture Kashmir.
On October 26, 1947, Jammu and Kashmir’s Maharaja Hari Singh signed the instrument of accession after which the Indian Army landed in J&K to drive away the tribal invaders.
The tribals had worked out a neat and clean plan with Pakistan that they would loot J&K and take away the booty while Pakistan would take the land. Maharaja Hari Singh’s Army in Kashmir was outnumbered by the tribal raiders by 1:10.
After entering into Kashmir the raiders went on a killing and loot spree and made their intentions very clear. The people of J&K resisted their moves and fought them till the Indian Army landed in the Valley.
Maharaja Hari Singh had to leave Kashmir after the tribals snapped the electric supply to the palace and Srinagar city by damaging the Mohra Power Station. The engineer incharge there was killed by the tribals.
Maharaja understood the designs of Pakistan and tribals and as a visionary leader he realized that if he had to save his people from the enemies, he had only one option and that was joining hands with India. By signing the instrument of accession, Maharaja secured the lives and properties of his people and played his role as leader.
The fact that more than 6,000 Kashmiris died fighting the invaders stands out as proof to resistance to the tribal invasion. The first Indian Air Force sortie landed at the Srinagar airport and the soldiers drove into Srinagar city on October 27, 1947.
After the soldiers landed the process to push back the tribals commenced. They were engaged by the Indian Army and the locals at different places and were not allowed to enter Srinagar city. It is reported that more than 1,000 soldiers laid down their lives while driving away the tribals. Once uprooted from the outskirts of Srinagar city, the tribals could not get a foothold till they crossed the Kohala Bridge over the Jhelum River into areas presently under Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Indian leadership has been reiterating that PoK has to be reclaimed as it’s a part of Jammu and Kashmir and is under illegal occupation of Pakistan. On the occasion of Accession Day, Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh sent a clear message to adversaries that retrieving PoK is on top of GoI’s agenda.
