Early Times Report
REASI, Oct 29: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the hydroponics technology for the production of fresh organic vegetables. KVK, Reasi has established a hydroponics unit at its campus and many farmers, farm women and youths are showing keen interest in this innovative technology. According to Sr.Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal hydroponics is an art or science of growing plants in water or in an inert growing medium that is enriched with all the necessary nutrients required for the optimum growth of plants.
He informed that in hydroponics system plants get balanced water and nutrition and this system saves about 80 per cent of water. He expressed that with the increasing droughts and decreasing water table, hydroponics technology can prove as an efficient method of farming in modern era. He said that as the agricultural land is shrinking, this technology has the future. He narrated that in hydroponics system, plants are grown without soil and there are least chances of infestation of insects-pests and diseases in the crop.
He added that good quality leafy vegetables can be produced by using this technology. He said that leafy crops such as lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard etc. can be grown hydroponically and one can generate profits by adopting this technology. He added that the crops like tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, strawberry etc. can also be grown in this system of farming. He said that the crop is uniformly grown as each plant gets balanced nutrition and water. He further said that in hydroponics there is no problem of weeds and plants are healthier with more vigour.
He said that waste areas can be utilized for the hydroponics as the crops are grown in the soilless culture. He added that the hydroponics system can be very useful to produce the organic vegetables especially in the urban and semi-urban areas. Dr. Gurdev Chand, Prof. & Head, Division of Plant Physiology, SKUAST-J informed that the plants are grown in an inert substrate such as the perlite, coco coir, gravel etc. in the hydroponics unit.
He said that plants are grown in the channel usually made of plastic that allows nutrients solution to flow uniformly through it in this system. He informed that the oxygen is not depleted in the system and nutrition solution is always flown in the system. He added that hydroponics system is very effective to grow the leafy vegetables organically and even the people from urban areas can grow fresh organic vegetables by the adoption of this technology. He stated that the plants under hydroponics technique grow faster and yield an earlier harvest. He narrated that the hydroponics technique requires less space and roots need not to be spread. He said that the water can be reused in hydroponics and thus water can be saved.
