Jammu, Oct 30: The Prominent Gujjar leader and an intellectual of J&K) demanded for the reservation of Rajouri-Anantnag Lok Sabha seat for Schedule Tribe community. Shamsheer Hakla Poonchi said this will in real sense ensure political empowerment to the Schedule Tribe people of JK UT. Terming the grant of reservations to Schedule Tribes a historic step taken by Narendra Modi Government at Centre, Mr. Hakla today said this way a great anomaly done with this Tribe has been done away with by the present Government. Talking to a group of members of Gujjar and Bakerwal community here, today he said that one Parliamentary seat be also reserved for the Schedule Tribe community in the Union Territory (UT). In this regard he demanded that the Rajouri-Anantnag Lok Sabha seat be reserved for Schedule Tribe Community under Schedule Tribe status norms as a huge population of Schedule Tribe community resides in this constituency.
Shamsher Hakla Poonchi said that the Schedule Tribe community resides in the Twenty (20) districts of J&K U.T and can be found mainly in hilly, mountainous and far-flung areas near forests and on the Indo-Pak LOC & International Borders of J&K with a population of over many lakhs. Gujjar Bakarwal Schedule Tribe are divided into 3 tribes: Settled, Halfsettled And Unstelled Nomadic. The needs and problems, the language and culture of Gujjar Bakarwal Schedule tribe Community is quite different from other communities of J&K U.T and that is why this tribe has its own identity, customs and unique way of life. The Gujjar Bakarwal Schedule tribe community belongs to Islam religion in J&K U.T. He said that the Gujjars Bakarwals Schedule Tribe community of J&K U.T are politically, educationally, socially and economically backward.
Mr. Hakla said with this step of Government the Schedule Tribe community of the J&K UT can get a representation in the Parliament as well which is their right as per the norms under the constitution. Hakla said that the members of this Schedule Tribe community live in 20 districts of the UT mainly in hilly and border areas and they have remained neglected for the decades together due to which majority of them is living in abject poverty and backwardness. He said, though Government Of India had given the Schedule Tribe (S.T) status to Gujjars and Bakarwals of J&K in 1991 for their upliftment and betterment but the successive J&K Governments deprived them of this right. Hakla said that due to indifferent attitude of successive Governments in J&K the community was deprived of political rights.
