Omar has faux paus on Mufti’s flight
12/18/2008 11:28:47 PM

Ealy Times Report
Jammu, Dec 18: When Peoples Democratic Party Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed took a flight from Srinagar this morning; the National Conference President Omar Abdullah’s aides probably did not check his ticket details.
Mufti was headed for Jammu but Omar was informed that he has left for New Delhi. In election season when leader of a regional party from Kashmir leaves for New Delhi, the guesses are obvious –discussing power scheme with the Congress high command.
Omar’s guess, therefore, was not out of place but his information was awfully wrong. Every flight from Srinagar does not always head for New Delhi. Mufti had actually taken a flight for Jammu where he had hectic activity for the day and has an electioneering schedule for next three days.
Fed on wrong information, Omar told his audience in Batmalloo constituency of Srinagar this afternoon that Mufti has left for New Delhi. “Sensing defeat after the sixth phase of elections and having realized that the PDP has been uprooted in South Kashmir as well, has rushed to New Delhi today”, Omar told his audience at an election rally where former Finance Minister Tariq Hameed Qarra is PDP candidate against Irfan Shah of National Conference.
Knowing little that the former Chief Minister Mufti had actually taken a flight for Jammu, Omar said, “Mufti is jittery and has gone to his masters in New Delhi in panic to seek their intervention to help him, little realizing that the people's verdict cannot be changed by anybody”. He went on say, “Mufti is mistaken if he feels that New Delhi will decide as to who will form the next government in the state”.
Even though Omar Abdullah on Wednesday claimed that his party will return to the assembly with a two-third majority but his latest statement apparently stems out from indication of visiting External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee who had hinted in Srinagar on Tuesday that Congress was open to post-poll alliances in Jammu and Kashmir.
He appealed to the electorate of the seventh phase to overwhelmingly vote in favour of the National Conference so as to consolidate the party's gains of the earlier six phases of the ensuing state assembly elections. He promised that “National Conference will unleash an era of unparallel, unprecedented, historic development and growth in the state”.
Meanwhile, Mufti today arrived in Jammu on a three day tour to campaign for his party candidates in various constituencies. In Jammu and Samba districts PDP is eyeing at least four seats including Vijapur, Suchetgarh, Marh and Nagrota. Mufti is scheduled to address an election rally in Jammu city before his departure for Srinagar on 20 December.
Addressing party workers at his residence here today, Sayeed said after getting optimistic trends for the party from the last six phases of polls, the party cadres in Jammu must gear up to ensure the victory of the PDP candidates in the district. "By pursuing its pro-people agenda with steadfastness, PDP has set new ethical standards of political morality in the State," he said and added that consolidating on the public goodwill the PDP cadres in Jammu must take the party's programmes and policies to the grassroots level to garner public support for its candidates.
The PDP Patron said the fast-changing equations in and around Jammu & Kashmir offers the country's leadership a great opportunity to make India more at peace not only with its neighbors, but also with itself. "The emerging scenario offers a momentous opening for conceiving an exceptional grand strategy for the country and the region in Jammu & Kashmir," he said and added that the Indo-Pak peace process has provided a strong foundation to build upon and it could be further fortified by reconciling the past misgivings and leaving for future generations a different prosperous region.
