KVK promotes organic vegetables farming

REASI, Nov 8: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the organic vegetables farming in Reasi distt. of J&K. KVK, Reasi scientists are providing the technical know-how on the scientific cultivation of organic vegetables to the farmers. Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal said that KVK, Reasi is endeavoring to enhance the income and employment of the farmers of the area by the introduction of new ventures in the district.
He narrated that there is huge scope of organic vegetables in Reasi distt. of J&K as the distt. is visited by millions of pilgrims across the nation and there are number of hotels/restaurants at Katra and other areas of the distt. He informed that the organic vegetables are important crops and have multiple health benefits. He said that organic vegetables are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. He added that intake of organic leafy vegetables lowers the cholesterol levels and protects neuronal cells of the body. He informed that the regular inclusion of leafy vegetables in salads is known to prevent osteoporosis, iron-deficiency anemia, cardiovascular diseases, age-related muscular disease in the elderly people, cancers and Alzheimer's disease. He narrated that organic vegetables such as lettuce has low calorie content and zero fat. He further informed that it is a good source of chlorophyll and Vitamins A, B1, B2, C and K, folic acid and manganese. He informed that the KVK scientists are stressing on organic and natural farming and upgrading the knowledge of the farmers for the preparation of organic formulations such as Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, Ghanjeevamrit, Panchgavya, fermented butter milk, cow urine etc. so that they can utilize them for their organic vegetables production. He added that organic vegetables have more quality and farmers can fetch more money by growing them. He further said that by observing the successful results of organic vegetables growers many new farmers are coming forward for the organic vegetables farming. According to Prof.& Head, Division of Plant Physiology, SKUAST-J, Dr.Gurdev Chand that quality organic vegetables can also be grown in green house, poly house or hydroponically and said that they have an immense marketing potential. He discussed on the nutritional and packaging practices in organic vegetables crops for more profits. He guided on the technical knowhow on increasing the shelf life of organic vegetables so that the farmers can generate more farm income.
