Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec19- In a much publicized murder of cement tycoon RB Chopra family and his two servants on September 18, 2006, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed its comprehensive status report in the court after spending around 3500 man days outside the state crisscrossing the whole of northern, central and western India. SIT prayed before the Court to allow it to present charge-sheet against the accused arrested so far and provide sufficient time to unravel the whole conspiracy of the case and arrest the remaining accused
Exempting SP SIT Mubassir Latif from his personal appearance on the next date of hearing, Justice YP Nargotra of J&K High Court Jammu wing, today directed Additional Advocate General VK Chopra that he shall keep the case dairies ready for perusal of the Court.
Court later adjourned the case at the request made on behalf of Adv DS Thakur counsel for the petitioner and directed the registry to list the case after two weeks.
In its comprehensive status report SIT submitted that it examined so many suspects and looked into every possible reason for the killing of RB Chopra, his wife, daughter, his servant and driver, besides investigating the business aspects as well as personal rivalry with RB Chopra and his family.
The status report gives sequence of events and the weapon used the in crime. SIT during the investigation consulted crime journals, literature available on the internet prepared by the police of other states besides getting dossier published on the functioning of Bawaria and Pradhi tribes which was of immense help in understanding the modus operandi of these tribes. The dossier was prepared by Delhi police in the wake of series of similar incidents in the 1990. This dossier narrowed down the search for the mystery weapon which was found used in the murder of Chopra's family. It has been explicitly mentioned in the dossier that Pradhi tribes based in Goona use one such weapon which has a twin teethed end.
The report further says that a team of 17 officials were sent to MP in the month of December 2006 to gather clue of incident and camped in the District of Ujjan, Divas, Shivpuri and Goona for more than one month and were assisted by the police of MP, UP, Harayana, Rajasthan and particularly SIT of MP. On January 6, 2007 SIT laid an ambush between village Khejra and Goona and was able to nab two suspects of Gang namely Mahesh and Rooshi both sons of Premda, meanwhile one Pradhi namely Shanker informed the police that he had seen a gang of dreaded Pradhi criminals in Jammu on the very day of incident. The suspects were brought to Jammu and put to thorough investigation but they proved hard nut to crack. Since the case was a complicated one, SIT resorted to modern methods of scientific investigation and put the suspects to polygraphy, brain mapping and narco analysis test conducted at FSL Bangalore as a result they broke down after multiple rounds of tests revealed that eight members including Sangram, Kiran, Roshi, Mahes sons of Premda Pradhi, Siknader son of Bali Chand, Narinder son of Krishan, Nanju son of Chatter, Vicky son of Himmat Singh Pradhi, all belonging to Pradhi tribe and residents of village Khejrachak District Goona MP, had committed this gruesome act and were engaged by local criminal namely Bhawani Singh son of Balia Pradhi resident of Katra for this heinous crime who also showed the house of Chopra to this party. During the intervening night of 17/18 September, 2006 all the above mentioned accused with the involvement of Chopra's driver Jagan Nath entered in the house and killed whole family taking away Rs 50/55 lakhs and some diamonds. When driver Jagan Nath demanded his share, he too was killed.
According to the report, besides above named accused, number of other suspects namely Ajab Singh Wazir business associate of RB Chopra, Nigam Chopra nephew of deceased RB Chopra, Mubaraz Khan alias Munna resident of Talab Khatikan and Suraj of Shivpuri MP, were also taken to Bangalore for Polygraph, brain mapping and NAT. Barring Suraj, all were found negative. Suraj had disclosed that Bhawani Singh of Katra asked him in 2005 that if he was interested in committing a dacoity of Rs 30-40 lakhs, however, the deal could not materialize as Bhawani demanded 1/3rd share in the booty. Thereafter Bhwani Singh contacted Sangram Singh with whom the deal was finalized resulting into the murder of Chopra family and looting of huge amount of money and some diamonds, the report adds.
