12/19/2008 10:36:37 PM
MUNISH GUPTA
Jammu, Dec 19: As a fallout of two-month long Amarnath land row agitation in July-August this year, the student community from Colleges in the winter capital city is on roads demanding cut in syllabus or an open choice in examination but the authorities, busy in election arrangements, have very little time to address the issue at this stage.
Students want the decision now so that can accordingly prepare for examinations but authorities want the elections to be over for examining demand on open choice on merits. “I am not aware of any students’ agitation as now we are busy with election duties”, Director Higher Education ND Wani even as hundreds of students today hit streets and resorted to arson outside the Jammu University campus.
Students are demanding concessions against the loss of study during two-month along agitation on Amarnath land row. They say that since Colleges were closed for two months the syllabus is nowhere near completion and therefore they should be given an open choice. Interestingly, students taking to agitation mode are not from all Colleges of the City.
It’s been four successive days since the students are agitating for “pen choice”. While talking to the Early Times, stakeholders expressed divergent views on the demands like open choice and reduction in syllabus.
Rahul from GGM Science College said that the session is yet to be completed hence the issue should be taken up at later stage and this is not an appropriate time to lodge the agitation while Gurdeep from MAM college while supporting the demand for open choice expressed that their studies were very much affected due to two months long agitation and there is remote possibility of covering the syllabus in the remaining session So it is better to start thinking of open choice at this stage it self.
Monika, a student from Government Women College Parade also supported the students agitation and said that either open choice should be given to them or syllabus must be reduce to help their course while Heena from GCW Gandhi Nagar totally opposed the idea and emphasized on the need to complete the session first. She also added that as there is a very stiff competition now but why can’t these students realize as we have not only to compete with the competitors of our state but we have also to compete outside the state also.
However Director Colleges Higher Education Department, ND Wani when contacted said that he was not aware of the students’ agitation for open choice and added that his focus this time was totally on the ongoing election process and the students issue would be addressed at later stages but not at latest movement.
Controller Examination Jammu University Dr PS Pathania also expressed the querry on this question and told that its not for student to decide but for the Principals of their respective institutes to forward the same at appropriate time. He said that the agitation is not carried at the right time as there are still two months of academic session is left which is enough to make up the study loss.
Prof. Nalini Kohli Principal Govt. women College Gandhi Nagar however made it clear that students of her college are mature enough to know about their responsibility and their academics. She also said that college faculty is properly guiding the students to prevent them from falling prey to politics of different student organizations.
Meanwhile Prof. Savitri Sharma from GCW Parade said that there are some section of the students who has been involved in this agitation as far as there is regular class work.
And if there is any need to take extra classes we are ready for it.
And due to the ongoing agitation for open choice by the various colleges a large number of college going students received multiple injuries in police lathicharge while they were staging a dharna by blocking vehicular traffic on the busy road outside Jammu university campus on Friday morning. The students later resorted to stone pelting targeting police and forced them to flee from the area.
Traffic was diverted for quite some time on the busy road which witnessed traffic jams.
The students were agitating and mounting pressure on the university administration to introduce open choice for the forthcoming graduate and post graduate level exams.
The students gathered outside the main gate of the University campus after boycotting their classes and forcing down closure of colleges before taking out protest march. Student leaders of ABVP were also lending their support to the students demand.
Aggrieved students allege that crucial working days were wasted during two month long Amarnath land agitation and even after holding extra classes the students were not in a position to complete their syllabus in time.
We are demanding curtailment in syllabus or open choice to end the stalemate but the university authorities were not ready to bend and give in easy.
On Contacting Dean Student Welfare Dhian Singh Bhau , he stated that from last four days we are requesting them to pacify the matter and dissolve the issues whatver their demands are but no body is ready to talk to us and moreover principals of different degree colleges have claimed that classes were going on regularly and syllabus would be completed well in time to allow students to prepare well ahead of their annual examinations
