| Jamaat, NC in confrontation mode | | | Early times report Srinagar, Dec 20: The right wing Jamait-i-Islami leadership has denied National Conference patron, Farooq Abdullah's allegations that the Jamaat activists campaigned for voters' support for the PDP.A spokesman of the Jamaat has said that the allegations were baseless and "our organization continues to oppose participation in the poll process." However, the National Conference leadership has reiterated it charge that Jamaat leaders had used mosques to campaign for voters support in favour of the PDP. Jamaat leadership has rubbished the charge explaining that after the National Conference found its going difficult in south Kashmir it started blaming the Jamaat for supporting the PDP. It said right from day one "we have been with those campaigning for poll boycott and hence the question of our support to one party or the other did not arise. The Jamaat leader said that till the poll process in five phases was completed, the National Conference did not accuse Jammat of siding with the PDP. "Why the National Conference leadership has started blaming us when the polling in phase six ended?" they asked. They said that perhaps the National Conference was trying to use "us" as a scapegoat for its failure to secure support of the voters in south Kashmir. One senior Jamaat leader said that the National Conference leaders were trying to cover up their failure by dishing out strange stories. One day they talk of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed visiting Delhi for securing support of the UPA Government when the Mufti had not left Srinagar at all. However, the National Conference leaders continue to hold Jamaat responsible for forging a secret tie-up with the PDP. The Jamaat leaders said that "our organization has nothing to do with the politics of the state .Our's is a religious organization and we do not provide either direct or indirect support to any political party during the elections." |
