Demand for re-poll in Kathua areas
12/20/2008 11:29:22 PM
SUMIT SHARMA
Kathua, Dec 20: After re-poll at four places in three constituencies following allegations of unfairness in process, thousands of Kathua residents are up in arms alleging denial of voting rights.
However, there is a confusion leading to denial of voting rights. Most of the people complaining of denial of voting rights are the refugees of different categories who have right to vote for the Lok Sabha elections but not for state legislature. Their complaint is based on the premise that they had been voting for all previous elections but were denied opportunity in the present assembly election. Authorities say that past errors can be repeated.
There are also different complaints coming many areas of Kathua where people have been asking for re-poll. At some places the Electronic Voting Machines remained paralyzed and in other places there were scuffles between people and returning officers but the main complaint is raised by refugees. Immediately after polling in Kathua, refugees are holding protest demonstration against authorities demanding re- polling but authorities at the helm of affair seem to be deaf over this matter.
Talking to the EARLY TIMES, Som Nath Majotra, BSP candidate for Kathua constituency alleged connivance of Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar Kathua with his rival. He said that it is the mockery on democracy as around 7,000 people and among them ninety percent schedule caste have been deprived of their right to franchise.
He said that he approached the Chief Election Commissioner, BR Sharma and apprised him about the entire situation and regretted that despite assurance to get the matter inquired into nothing happened till date, he alleged.
He said that while on the one side the DC Kathua assured action against the delinquent officials, but on the other, his Additional Commissioner maintained that refugees who do not possess state subjects have no voting rights for assembly elections but can vote in Parliament elections.
