| Rain, snow affects normal life day before 'Chillai Kalan' | | | Early times report Srinagar, Dec 20: Incessant rains in plains and snowfall in upper reaches affected normal life in Valley on Saturday as the severe 40-day period of winter, 'Chillai Kalan', makes entry in the valley tomorrow. Srinager city and its suburbs received moderate rainfall from this morning, affecting the normal life. People carrying umbrella's and wearing thick cloths was a common site all day long. A report from the North Kashmir district said that a moderate to heavy snowfall was recorded at several place including Devar, Khanditop, Sogum, Waderballa, Teetwal, Machil, Rajwara in Kupwara, while Gulmarg and adjoining areas including Affarwat have been experiencing snow for last 24 hours Upper reaches of Pahalgam in South Kashmir have received a fresh snowfall with its adjoining areas receiving incessant rains. Meanwhile 'Chillai Kalan', makes its entry on a rather contrasting note today with the temperatures appreciating after a month-long cold wave. The cold wave began a bit earlier this year than the normal period of 'Chillai Kalan'. On January 31, the Chillai Kalan comes to an end but that does not mark the end of chill in Kashmir valley. It is followed by a 20-day long 'Chillai Khurd' and a 10-day long 'Chillai Bachh.' Due to the cold weather, traditional gowns made of woolen or tweed fabric, have become a common sight on the roads. Kangri, the earthen fire pot in a wicker basket, has remained the source to keep oneself warm even as modern gadgets like gas and electric heaters are also being used by the people in city to keep themselves warm.
