| Will Jammu make a choice between Nuts or Netas? | | | Bharat Raina
While I entered the city on my way from home in the outskirts of Jammu, Suddenly I realized that this city is going to choose its representative for Legislative assembly in few days from now. I started looking at various posters on walls of those who have got mandate from the prominent Political Parties I was reminded of the newspaper which I read in the morning before leaving my home and few of those names came to my mind while I was driving through, not so wide, roads of the Jammu City. These were the names of some of the persons who were also contesting the elections, I don't know for what reason or may be they have reasons and capabilities also but who knows. These were the names of not so familiar faces.
While I was still driving through the old city of Jammu, I saw lot of children of different ages trying to catch up for their morning classes and any body could see the urgency and concern in these children for their future. One can make out that these children are from all over the State. I call the area from Panjthirthi to Dogra Hall, a cultural amalgam where faces give you an idea of the area to which these boys and girls belong. I was some how again reminded of the elections and the fact that this culturally rich area will soon have its representative in the assembly who would not only be representing the natives of this area but will also indirectly represent all the boys and girls from all over the state who can be seen on the streets in the mornings and in the evenings. These are the streets which have given Jammu, the likes of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, General N.C Viz and so many others who may be doing or have done very well in their lives. So the representative will be representing them also.
Then suddenly some thing shook me and it was that have these people done any analysis of those who want to represent them in the assembly and on 24th December 2008 for whom , These people, not all, will come out of their homes and vote for some body, of whom they don't know the strengths and weaknesses. Then again I went back in my thoughts to the morning news paper and I started thinking that ,may be, those names which were not so familiar, have some strengths which would really change Jammu for good, but who knows as I was not sure.
While I was confronting with all this suddenly I realized that I have entered another area of Jammu which is considered the area of moneyed people and the educated ones. I started thinking about the same thing again that these influential people will also be represented by someone who will always succumb to the influences of these influentials, leaving aside leading them. I brushed my memory to remember the contesting candidates in this area and again was disappointed to know that profile was not that impressive, should say not at all impressive.
By that time I had already burnt lot of fuel in my vehicle and I took way back to my home with the feeling and thoughts that I will make an effort to tell these innocent yet ambitious lot that there are still few days left for them to take decision ,so for some time please leave your routine works and sit at your home and spend few hours to make an assessment of the people they would like to be their representative , so that he will not only address the common "Bijli- Paani" issue but address the issues of
• How Jammu can contribute in maintaining seven percent growth rate of country's economy ?
• How can Jammu contribute well to state GDP?
• How can Jammu be a role model in taking initiative in economic development so that it becomes an example for rest of the country.
• How can Jammu take steps in such a way that it does not face a situation where any of its boys and girls from other region feels unsafe?
• How can Jammu become a place of educational excellence
• And how can Jammu be happy forgetting all its worries?
I thought right now we are not competing with any other region of the state but we are competing with ourselves to improve for tomorrow from what we are today.
I hope my observations, even if it influences a single person for thinking and then acting on it, I will feel that Jammu is changing for better. So please sit and make an assessment about contesting candidates and then go and choose your neta, not nuts on 24th December.2008.
