| Kargil Students Union celebrate Annual Day | | Students from remote areas need special attention: Governor | | Early Times Report JAMMU, DECEMBER 21: Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today called for creating equal opportunities for youth of the far-flung and remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir to compete in various competitive examinations, on equal terms with the boys and girls from the more developed areas of the State.
Speaking at an Eid and Annual Day function organized by the Kargil (Ladakh) Students Union here this evening, the Governor said that special arrangement with regard to coaching of the candidates from the Ladakh region and other remote areas are required to be made for achieving this objective.
"The youth will have to be adequately coached and prepared for competing in the various Civil Services and Professional Entrance Examinations", he said while exhorting the Kargil youth to aim high and inculcate a spirit of competition for excelling in different fields of life. "In this age of competition, the youth from the far-flung areas just cannot afford to lag behind", the Governor observed.
Mr Vohra said that there is a plan to assist the Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipura, in the Kashmir Division, to initiate such coaching courses for students. It is proposed to provide specially for students from the Ladakh region and similarly placed difficult areas to be benefited from the aforesaid new Institute. Such facilities will also have to be created in other areas, for encouraging disadvantageous sections of the student community.
Attaching significance to female education, the Governor said that the scale of scholarships awarded by the State Government have been recently revised and enhanced, particularly for girl students, to give impetus to their school and higher education. He said that ornamenting girls with education will help in creating an educated society, which will lead to progress and prosperity. Responding to the demands, presented in a memorandum by the Kargil Students Union, the Governor said that the work on the Kargil Hostel at Jammu will be expedited and enhancement of seats in the Universities of Kashmir and Jammu will be examined very early. He assured the Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor, Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council, that all the bottlenecks in the completion of the Hostel must be sorted out, to enable it to start functioning from the next year. As regards satellite campuses to be established by the Universities, the Governor said that he would want to be fully satisfied about the true usefulness of such bodies before hastening to enlarge this approach. Vohra complimented the Students Union on their Annual Day and hoped that, away from their homes, they will pursue their academics with a sense of devotion and dedication to fulfill the urges and aspiration of their parents. He said that higher education holds key for the youth of the remote areas to achieve self-reliance and economic emancipation. The Governor was highly impressed by the cultural programme presented by the students, depicting the composite and rich cultural ethos of the region and complimented them. Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kachu Ahmed Ali Khan, stressed the need for expeditious completion of the Hostel at Jammu and more openings for the students for pursuing higher education. Khan asked the students to concentrate on their studies for fulfilling the dreams of their parents. To mark the occasion, the students presented Balti, Sheena and other folk songs. The President of the Students Union, Mr Ghulam Mohammed Khan, presented a memorandum to the Governor. A large number of students, prominent citizens of Kargil and Leh, including Mr P Namgyal and Haji Nasarullah Khan, both MLC, and Mr Ghulam Hassan Khan, former Member Parliament were present on the occasion.
