Security upped for last phase

Jammu, Dec 21: Elaborate security arrangement have been made for last phase of polling in 21 constituencies across three districts including the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar.

Over 21,000 security personnel have been deployed in Jammu and Samba districts which go to polls in the seventh and final phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on December 24 to decide the fate of a record number of 241 candidates.

"Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the seventh phase of elections in 13 assembly segments of Jammu and Samba districts and as many as 210 companies of central forces have been deployed in this range," senior police officials saidon Sunday.

These companies have been deployed at 1153 polling stations of 11 constituencies, they said.

Besides, 3000 police personnel including 1000 from outside the district have been mobilised for security arrangements.

Twenty companies of para-military forces comprising 1280 personnel have been deployed in the security of candidates, while 11 companies with 704 men have been deputed in strong rooms.

In samba district, 40 companies of para-military forces comprising about 3500 jawans are being deployed at 230 polling stations of two assembly segments, officials said, adding that 1000 local police personnel are being deployed across the district.

Jammu district has the maximum number of 1153 polling stations including 154 auxiliary booths.

After the final revision of electoral rolls, Jammu district has over 9.06 lakh voters for 11 segments, Deputy Commissioner Mandeep Bhandari said.

Gandhi Nagar constituency has the maximum number of over 1.43 lakh voters while Jammu east has only 51,660 voters. Samba district has over 1.70 lakh voters, he said.

Strict vigil is being maintained on vehicles entering Jammu from Rajouri, Poonch and Doda districts as there are reports that militants could sneak in from these districts to carry out a strike to disrupt the election process, police sources said.
