| Governor opens 54th National School Games | | | JAMMU, DECEMBER 22: Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today observed that despite registering rapid growth over the years, women cricket lacked the luster the men's cricket enjoyed. Declaring open the 54th National School Games- Cricket Girls Under-19, here this misty morning, the Governor that perhaps one of the contributory factors was that women's cricket die not enjoy adequate media attention, not even quarter of the publicity received by men's cricket. "Cricket is no more merely a gentleman's game with women pitching into it in a big way", Vohra said in a lighter vein while emphasizing the need for giving due publicity to women cricket events. "How many amongst us know that our national Women Cricket team is one of the top three teams in the world", he asked and hoped that the achievement registered by the women cricketers at the international arena will inspire the young and budding players to make their mark in the game. The Governor expressed happiness over the participation of the various teams from rest of the country and wished them success in the tournament. He said that given the opportunity and proper coaching, many of the girl cricketers at the Under-19 level would find a place in the National squad. He saw no reason why Indian girls will not achieve the place they deserved at the international level provided they are given the requisite facilities and encouragement. Vohra called upon the organizers to enable the young girls the visiting teams to move around for sight seeing in Jammu and carrying back refreshing memories of the City of Temples. Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner/Secretary Higher Education, Mr Khazer Mohammed Wani, said that 14 teams of the country were participating in the ongoing tournament, which includes teams from Chandigarh, Gujarat, Madhaya Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Punjab, Andhra Prades, Chattisgarh, Haryana, Orissa, Maharashtra, Utter Pradesh, Delhi, Jharkhand and the hosts, Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir squad comprises girls from all the three regions, including nine players from the Kashmir Valley. The Governor declared the tournament open by setting free pigeons, symbol of peace. To mark the event, students from various educational institutions of Jammu presented a variety programme, depicting the cultural diversity of the State. A large number of sports lovers were present at the inaugural match, which had to be delayed due to low visibility conditions in the wake of the morning fog.
Meanwhile, in a message, the Governor said that women cricket has taken huge strides forward over the years and it is encouraging that the girls of the State were not lagging behind in this game. He hoped that the hosting of this national event in Jammu will immensely benefit "our budding women cricketers and inspire them to make their mark in the game". Vohra said that sports play a vital role in overall personality development and inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship, which is an important character development exercise from a very early age.
