| Fair weather favours brisk campaigning in Srinagar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Dec 22: Unexpectedly fair weather in Srinagar district helped political parties in carrying out vigorous campaigning in the eight constituencies today, the last day of the pre-poll campaign. Contesting candidates belonging to the Congress, the PDP and the National Conference, besides a score of independents held a number of small rallies and some of them were seen having resorted to door to door campaign. In interior of Srinagar anti-poll elements spread rumors on restrictions under section 144 Cr PC having been imposed in the entire Srinagar district. However, official sources denied it saying that these restrictions had been placed in Nowhatta and Rajouri Kadal areas as part of precautionary measures. The sources said that these restrictions had been imposed after the activists of two political parties had clashed in interior of the city yesterday. Asked whether these restrictions will be enforced on the day of polling the sources said that right from the early morning of December 24 these restrictions will be lifted but may be imposed in other areas to prevent anti-poll elements from disrupting the polling. Polling in eight constituencies in Srinagar district is being viewed with importance. Poll watchers, besides the contesting parties fear that poor polling could affect the prospects of their candidates. However, trends indicate that four out of eight constituencies were likely to witness normal polling with the average ranging between 25 and 35 per cent. Idgah, Khanyar, Habba Kadal, Zadibal may witness poor polling. Against this Hazratbal, Sonawar, Amirakadal and Batamaloo may witness normal voting. Wednesday’s polling will decide the fate of former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, who is contesting from Hazratbal and Sonawar, former Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, who is in the fray in Jammu West constituency and the Speaker of the Assembly, Tara Chand who is the congress candidate from Chhamb. In these 21 constituencies, the fate of about 20 former ministers and party chiefs are at stake. |
