| Vohra for integrated development approach | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, DECEMBER 23: Stressing the vital importance of integrated urban development, with focus on improved civic amenities, Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today called for close coordination between various developmental agencies for achieving optimum results. Reviewing the status of various projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) at a high level meeting here this morning, the Governor directed the immediate establishment of an empowered apex level Committee under the Chief Secretary for resolving all inter-departmental problems and for ensuring effective and time bound implementation of the projects. The Governor also directed the immediate notification of two Committees under the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, respectively, who would be fully responsible for ensuring effective coordination of all inter-departmental issues/hurdles being faced by the line departments and the executing agencies. Vohra instructed the executing agencies to ensure the specification and quality in the execution of the works and also adhere to the time frame and financial targets fixed for each project. He impressed upon the executing agencies and the line departments that while executing the projects, public convenience should be kept uppermost in view, especially in the congested areas. He also stressed the need for creating public awareness about the implementation of the projects, especially sewerage and water supply, which would enable the people at large to upgrade their sanitary conditions and advance their interests.
The Governor urged all the Heads of technical departments, attending the meeting, to educate the residents of the areas in which the schemes were under implementation to bear the inconvenience emanating from the ongoing works. Giving a presentation on the status of various schemes, Commissioner/Secretary, Housing and Urban Development, Ms Naseema Lankar, said that the centrally sponsored programme of JNNURM was launched throughout the country in 2005. The reform driven programme envisaged integrated development of urban areas and ensuring basic facilities to urban poor in cities and towns. She said that among 63 cities all over the country, selected as Mission Cities, two cities of Srinagar and Jammu were also included by the Centre for availing of the funding under JNNURM. Under the programme, projects worth Rs 1579. 24 crores have been sanctioned under different heads of JNNURM. These, interalia, include two prestigious sewerage projects in the two capital cities. The Mission aims at developing infrastructure in urban areas and providing basic facilities required by the growing population in the next 25 years. Among others, the meeting was attended by the Advisor to Governor, Mr C Phunsog, Chief Secretary, Mr S S Kapur, Financial Commissioner, Planning & Development, Mr S L Bhat, Financial Commissioner, Works, Mr Samuel Vergheese, Chief Executive Officer, Economic Reconstruction Agency, Mr Pankaj Jain, Principal Secretary to Governor, Mr B B Vyas, senior officers and Chief Engineers of various departments.
