12/23/2008 10:40:46 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 23-Even with fatigued body several contesting candidates were seen engaged in door to door campaign today. Though the usual pre-poll campaign in 21 constituencies ended yesterday, candidates spent hours together in moving from one vicinity to the other. The BJP candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, Nirmal Singh, said that "I have been on my feet right from the early hours of the morning in interacting with voters."
Asked whether he planned rest for the day after hectic campaigning, Nirmal Singh said "no question of taking any rest. I want to utilize the next 17 hours in meeting people in my constituency."
Panthers Party General secretary, Harsh Dev Singh, said "though I am suffering from bad throat I continue to remain in touch with our polling agents. I have directed the party candidates to carry out door to door campaign even till late evening hours."
Raman Bhalla, who is contesting the Gandhi Nagar seat as Congress candidate, too visited several areas in his constituency. He said "there is no question of taking rest till the end of polling tomorrow. "Number of candidates in Jammu west and Jammu east were seen visiting different localities on foot. The BJP candidate from Jammu East, Ashok Khajuria, said "today's whispering campaign will help me to gain more ground."
Fair weather favoured better interaction between the candidates and the voters in all the 13 constituencies in Jammu and Samba districts. Though there are several potential independent candidates in the field the contest in majority of the constituencies is going to be multi- cornered with BJP, the Congress, the National Conference, the Panthers Party and the BSP measuring swords against one another.
Indications are that the 13 constituencies will witness heavy turnout of voters. Experts are of the opinion that the voting percentage may range between 55 and 65 per cent in the rural belts. In the three constituencies in the Jammu city the polling percentage may range between 50 and 55 per cent.
Official sources said that additional companies of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in various areas of the two districts. All the polling stations have been placed under heavy security cover.
