Congress leaders go missing from City
12/23/2008 10:41:43 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 23- Has the old Jammu city remained out of bounds for the Congress? This question is being debated in public and political circles after campaigning for the election ended yesterday. This is so because among half a dozen top Congress guns from Delhi and other states not a single leader had held any election rally in the old city.
Besides Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, who visited Jammu twice, several other party leaders, including Haryana Chief Minister, Bhoopinder Singh Hooda, Union Minister, S.K.Shinde and Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dixit, had held rallies in the rural belts and on the outskirts of the old city. It was only Sheila Dixit who addressed a rally at Sarwal in interior of the city.
Manmohan Singh addressed a rally in the periphery of the city at Satwari, Sonia Gandhi held a rally at R.S.Pora. Bhoopinder Singh Hooda addressed voters in the border bet of Arnia and at Nagrota. Even former Chief Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad and the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz, addressed rallies in various areas of Jammu and Samba districts but not in the old city.
Congress spokesman, Ravinder Sharma, while commenting on it, said "we concentrated in the rural belts of Jammu district." He claimed that in the old city the Congress was well placed and there was no need for top party leaders to hold pre-poll rallies.
However, police sources said that the old city was not selected for top Congress leaders, having Z category security cover, because of security reasons. But party sources said that in interior of the city the Congress candidates could not muster peoples' support for rallies which would have been addressed by political leaders of the stature of Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Bhoopinder Singh Hooda. However, against this top leaders belonging to the BJP, including L. K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Shanta Kumar, Navjot Singh Sidhu and others addressed rallies in the old city. Even BSP supreme, Mayawati, also addressed a rally in the parade grounds in the interior of the city.
Ravinder Sharma said that the party organized big rallies during the visit of Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Sheila Dixit, S.K.Shinde and others in the outskirts of Jammu city and such big rallies would have not been possible in the old city.
