| Dogs unleash terror in Srinagar City but not poll issue yet | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 23- Returning home during evening on a two-wheeler or leaving for work in the early hours is a nightmare for many locals at Maulvi stop in the Lalbazar area. Hundreds of men, women and children become victims of dog bites in the city every day. According to locals, stray dogs' activity heightens at night, when they chase two-wheeler riders menacingly, barking all the way. Daily, by 10 p.m., as if by a magic wand, dozens of dogs start roaming in the area. They chase two wheelers frightening the rider and persons on the pillion. Sources said that hundred fifty cases of dog bites have been so far recorded in the city last month. Although number of dog bites is expected to increase this month, these frequent incidents have not moved municipal authorities to take initiatives against this menace. "We have made several appeals to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, but they turn deaf ear to our pleas. The cases of dog bites is the daily affair now with children and women being the main victims,'' said Abdul Aziz, resident of Moulvi stop. Every resident of this locality elicited the similar response in wake of this menace. "We approached officials of Municipal Corporation several times. However to our utter dismay they do not consider dog bites as a severe problem. We appeal 'Srinagar Municipal Corporation' to put an end to the menace,'' said Muzaffar Wani, local shopkeeper. The official sources of the 'Srinagar Municipal Corporation' said that the corporation is short of medicines necessary for killing stray dogs."The stocks of medicine available this time with us have expired,'' said an official of SMC who wishes anonymity Adding to the woes of locals, Srinagar Municipal Corporation chose this area to dump the garbage of the locality. The presence of garbage has increased the number of stray dogs. Children prefer to stay indoors out of fear of these deadly species. "Huge piles of unattended garbage strew on roadside serves feeding ground for dogs. Instead of taking appropriate measures to clear the streets of this trash, concerned authorities give lame excuses,' 'expressed Saleem Kirmani. "We warn SMC that if immediate steps are not taken to resolve this problem, the residents of this locality will come to streets and stage protests,'' he added.
