| India, Bangladesh to resolve land disputes jointly | | |
Agartala, Sep 16 India and Bangladesh have opined that land and water disputes between them could be resolved through bilateral talks.
Speaking to mediapersons at Muhurichar in Belonia sub-division in South Tripura district yesterday, Union Water Resources Minister.
Saifuddin Soz and his Bangladeshi counterpart Hafizuddin Ahmed said the problems faced by both countries were 'very genuine' and can only be resolved through bilateral talks.
''People living in the border areas of the two nations are the worst sufferers,'' Prof Soz said. Both countries will work out plans to resolve the boundary disputes at the forthcoming joint river commission meeting to be held at Dhaka on September 19 and 20.
The 29-member India-Bangladesh delegation, led by Prof Soz and Mr Ahmed, made a whirlwind tour of different disputed places in Sabroom and Belonia sub-divisions and inspected river bank protection work, minor lift irrigation and drinking water supply schemes in the Fenni and Muhuri rivers. Various works in both rivers were stalled following stiff opposition from Bangldesh.
The visiting team left for Kolkata this morning and will inspect the disputed areas in West Bengal before leaving for Dhaka on September 18 for the coming 37th joint river commission meeting.
Mr Lokranjan, Secretary, state Water Resource Department and Chief Engineer G K Malakar will represent the Indian delegation in the commission meeting.
