12/24/2008 10:50:30 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 24-As was expected the polling percentage in the eight constituencies in Srinagar district did not cross 30 per cent. It was still the highest when compared to the 1996 and 2002 elections. In 2002 poll the average polling percentage in the eight constituencies was just over five per cent with Sonawar constituency witnessing 9.96 per cent polling. Against this, the polling percentage in the 13 constituencies in Jammu and Samba districts ranged between 45 and 55 per cent.
Barring a few stray incidents of violence and clashes in some segments in Srinagar districts, the polling passed off peacefully as a result of tight security measures ordered by the Government. Today's polling in 21 constituencies will decide the fate of about 20 former ministers, besides former Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, former Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, former Finance Minister, Tariq Hamid Qarra, Assembly speaker, Tara Chand and former Social Welfare Minister, Mulla Ram. The polling will also decide the fate of heads of the BJP, Ashok Khajuria, Panthers Party, Bhim Singh, Jammu State Morcha (Progressive),Virender Gupta.
Among the former Ministers Farooq Abdullah is the only leader who was contesting from two constituencies, Hazratbal and Sonawar. Trends in today's polling indicated that while in Srinagar district the mood in the PDP camp was upbeat in Jammu and Samba the BJP was ahead of its rivals. Though the mood in the National Conference and the Congress camps was downbeat, both Omar Abdullah and Ghulam Nabi Azad claimed that they would form the Government on their own. Azad said that "Congress will form the Government." Asked whether it will form the Government in alliance with some party he said "no we will form the Government on our own.”Omar Abdullah said "after December 28, the National Conference will form the Government."
Reports said that soon after casting his vote Omar Abdullah flew to Delhi for celebrating the Christmas with his family members and friends.
