Early Times Report

JAMMU, DECEMBER 24 – Enthusiasm in seventh and final phase of polling was dominant with voters of different age groups turning up in large numbers to express the power of ballot in an unprecedented democratic fervour.
The voters, specially first timers, waited avidly in long queues for their turn to cast their votes. Feeling of being a vital part of the democratic system drew them to polling booths. It was a subtle pleasant experience for them to exercise their constitutional right to vote and elect representatives of their choice.
Gulshan, a first time voter at Jhajjar Kotli polling booth in Nagrota constituency while commenting on the feeling of casting her maiden vote said, “it is a privilege to exercise franchise as it gives me a rare opportunity to elect a legislator whom one holds accountable later”. Rekha Devi, a first time voter, at Polling Station No. 41 of Gandhinagar Assembly segment expressing her experience said “I feel on top of the world after casting my vote as I believe it will count and make the difference. I want good governance and better development from the Government”.
Shanti Devi, 73-years old infirm woman at polling station No. 40 of Gandhinagar gave a crisp reply when asked why she voted. “It is a sacred duty to vote. Voting is our tradition which we are proud of”. These simple words are meaningful, implying the message that elections nurture democratic temper necessary for promoting tolerance, amity and harmony and consequent national development.
Mohammad. Hussain, 87, while casting his vote at polling station 30 of Nagrota constituency said, “I voted for a candidate whom I expect to better the lot of elderly people, infirm and weak. I am sure he will promote and protect the interests of poor, old and downtrodden”, he added.
