| Democracy trumps: Vohra | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 24: Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today complimented the people of Jammu and Kashmir for reiterating their faith in democracy, despite many constraints, difficulties and threats and described the high voter turnout in the just concluded 7-phase Assembly Elections as a clear victory of the large majority who wish the restoration of peace and normalcy. "Democracy has triumphed yet again", the Governor said while complimenting the people for exercising their franchise, despite inclement weather and varied threats. He observed that the people had evinced their clear unwillingness to be taken for granted or exploited and pushed around in the name of region or religion. The Governor complimented the State Administration, the Police and the Central Police Forces for their sustained devotion to creating a peaceful environment for the successful conduct of free and fair polls. He also thanked the State Government employees and others deployed on Election duties for carrying out their duty efficiently. He appreciated the role of the media, both print and electronic, for their fair reporting of election related news and events and had a special word of praise for the Army for its strong support to counter-terrorist operations and all round support to the Security Forces during the past weeks. The Governor had good reason for personal satisfaction over the successful completion of Elections. On taking over the reigns of the State Administration on 10th July, on the last Independence Day, and on several other occasions in the past months, he had promised to the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the Elections shall be held within time and that these would be altogether free and fair. Mr Vohra stated, on many occasions, that there can be no alternative to the democratically elected dispensation. "I am overwhelmed by the massive response of the sagacious electorate", he observed today while leaving for Jammu. In the past 67 days, since the Election Notification was issued, the Governor had visited every district in the State, some on several occasions, to personally review all matters relating to the maintenance of security and engendering an undisturbed environment which would enable the successful completion of the rather prolonged electoral process. Before the 1st Phase poll on 17 November, till today, the Governor paid a dozen visits to the summer capital to chair Security Review Meetings, said a Raj Bhavan Spokesman, here this evening.
