| Srinagar offers two way face saving | | | Early Times Report Srinagar/Jammu, Dec 24: Majority of the people in Srinagar did not vote as Jammu and Kashmir today had last phase of polling for the assembly elections. However, at 20 per cent it was clearly a massive snub for the separatists who had launched an anti-election campaign and an equally massive achievement for the government which was able to prevent any major unpleasant incident. Voting four times higher than the turnout of 2002 elections, the summer capital city of Srinagar offered an equal face saving to both –the separatists and the government. For separatists it was a face saving in the sense that Srinagar recorded lowest polling in Kashmir Valley out of all the districts which went to polls in previous six phases. For the government it was an achievement in the sense that polling was at least 15 per cent higher than the turnout of 2002 elections. Certainly, the real snub to separatists was reflected when the eight constituencies of Srinagar, considered their strong-hold, recorded a 20 per cent turn-out-- the highest in 20 years-- compared to five per cent in the 2002 elections. Barring stray incidents of stone-pelting and clashes between anti-poll protestors and security forces today, the polling in all constituencies was by and large peaceful. Addressing a press conference at Srinagar this evening after the conclusion of 7th phase, the Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. B. R. Sharma said that barring a few minor incidents, the polling remained by and large peaceful. He said that 26.5 percent voting was registered in Hazratbal, 16.60 percent in Zadibal, 13.30 percent in Iddgah, 16.54 percent in Khanyar, 11.28 percent in Habba Kadal, 13.5 percent in Amira Kadal, 33.64 percent in Sonawar and in Batmaloo it was 18.06 percent in district Srinagar. Similarly, in Samba district the vote percentage in Samba constituency was 78 percent and 73 percent in Vijaypur. He said that in Jammu district the overall poll percentage was 68.62 percent with 73 percent in Nagrota, 63 percent in Gandhinagar, 61 percent in Jammu (East), 60 percent in Jammu (West), 72 percent in Bishnah, 75 percent in R.S. Pura, 70 percent in Suchetgarh, 72 percent in Marh, 70 percent in Raipur Domana, 75 percent in Akhnoor and 77 percent in Chhamb constituency.
