| War hysteria takes over poll euphoria | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 26: After two months of extended election festivity Jammu and Kashmir has fallen into war hysteria even as the Center has said that there is nothing to panic about. After frenzied movement of Pakistan Army along International Border in Rajasthan, reports are suggested Pakistan built up along Kathua and Akhnoor frontiers. Though the Army and BSF are tight lipped about situation but the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Kuldeep Khoda was today first to assert the “state of preparedness”. “Army and police are fully prepared to meet any eventuality incase war breaks out between India and Pakistan”, Khoda told a news conference in Srinagar today. Pakistan is reported to have deployed several companies of troops along with the Rangers across the 187 km long International Border (IB) between Kathua and Akhnoor in Jammu sector. Senior Army sources today said that regular Pakistani troops have been deployed along with the Rangers across the IB soon after the terrorist strike in Mumbai. They said that as far as the LOC is concerned "no unusual troop movement has been noticed except that the troop strength has been enhanced by deploying additional companies of Pakistani soldiers." In reply to a question whether the troops and Air Force have been alerted after Pakistan kept its war planes in readiness the sources said that "our border guards are on the alert but we have not deployed additional troops on the border." They said "our troops are always in a state of readiness to meet any challenge from across the LOC." In reply to another question he said that during the last one month the level of infiltration of militants from across the LOC has touched zero, adding that "round the clock patrolling on the border and the help we have received from the sophisticated gadgets, installed on the LOC, our troops have not allowed a single militant to cross into the Indian territory." Confirming this senior police officer said that it was the result of marked drop in the rate of ingress that the militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir were not able to kick up violence. He said in the current election year there were not more than 650 militancy related incidents against over 5,000 in 1996 poll year and over 3,000 in the previous election year in 2002. Commenting on the building of war hysteria by Pakistan defence expert here said "this was being done to deflect the attention from anti-terrorist operations that Pakistan was being asked to carry out." These experts said that the war hysteria was also being raised to dilute the impact of the hostile postures adopted by former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, against the establishment in Islamabad
