| Vohra suggests eco-friendly tourism development | | | EarlY Times Report JAMMU, DEC 26: Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today stressed the need for devising an eco-friendly strategy for integrated development of the various tourist destinations of the State for sustaining and promoting tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. Chairing a high level meeting of the officers of the Forests and Tourism Departments here this morning, the Governor observed that since most of the tourist destinations were located near the forests, the infrastructural development assumed crucial significance, particularly in view of certain restrictions laid down with regard to constructions.
Vohra said that Jammu and Kashmir is essentially a tourism State and its economy largely depended on the tourist activity. For sustaining tourism and creating facilities for incoming tourists, balanced infrastructural facilities were required at all the destinations. To remove the impediments in developing the requisite facilities, he called for devising a fool-proof developmental plan for consideration of the National Board for Wild Life. In this context, he ordered constitution of a Committee comprising the officers of the Forest and Tourism Departments for preparing a draft plan, to be taken up with all concerned at the apex level. While emphasizing the need for planned and regulated eco-tourism, the Governor exhorted the policy planners for seeking the expert advice of the experts in mountain architecture. "The infrastructural development has to be in harmony with the environment and ecology", he maintained. Vohra said that since a sizable population of the State, particularly in the Kashmir Valley, was engaged with tourism, directly or indirectly, efforts had to be redoubled to cater to the growing needs of the visiting tourists. The Secretary Tourism, Mr Nayeem Akhter, said that the Government had introduced a scheme of training the youth, hailing from the tourist destination, as guides, and providing incentives to the inhabitants of such areas for refurbishing their Kuthars for being used as paying guest facilities for tourists. The Governor observed that the paying guest system was working well in Leh and this mechanism could be experimented at various other places of the State as well. On this occasion, a presentation was given about the infrastructural facilities at various tourist destinations all over the State. Advisor to Governor, Mr H H Tyabji, Principal Secretary to Governor, Mr B B Vyas, Secretary Tourism, Mr Nayeem Akhter, and senior officers of the Forest & Environment and Tourism Departments were present in the meeting.
