Doda Police alert on counting eve
12/26/2008 10:51:58 PM
Shariq Nabi
Doda, Dec 26- Following rumours about possible clashes between the supporters of Congress candidate Abdul Majid Wani and NC nominee Khalid Najeeb Shurwardhy, District police have made elaborate security arrangements to thwart any ugly incident on the day of counting of votes scheduled for Sunday.
SSP Doda Prabhat Singh while confirming the reports of possible clashes said that the force is ready to meet any eventuality adding that if need arises additional forces will be deployed on this day. ‘As far as security is concerned it is not a difficult job for them to tackle any situation’, he said and maintained that when they can have polling without any militancy related incidence then it is not a matter of much concern for them to tackle such tensions, he added.
Both the candidates are claiming their victory and have made hectic efforts to lure the voters.
While Congress candidate Abdul Majid Wani, who won the last election as an independent, wants to retain the seat, his immediate rival and NC candidate Khalid Najeeb Shurwardhy, is fighting to regain his dynastic seat.
While the Congress candidate created rural-urban divide quiet efficiently by proposing himself as rural candidate, on which, he won last assembly elections as an independent candidate, the NC candidate on the other hand worked hard to divide the committed votes of Wani.
It is worthwhile to mention that during the previous election when Abdul Majid Wani was declared elected, the NC workers targeted his (Wani) supporters, especially those belonging from rural background. At least three shops were set at blaze and hundred of vehicles were damaged.
One Mohammed Fayaz son of M H Shah, whose newly purchased bike was burnt on that day, said that not only he but all rural people fear that this time they will be the prime target of NC workers if they lose this time again.
