| Army dedicates Memorial to 2005 earthquake victims of Uri | | | Early Times Report Udhampur, Dec 26- General Officer Commanding, Dagger Division today dedicated a memorial to 2005 earthquake victims of Uri Tehsil. The earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale had created havoc, killing nearly 700 people in Uri Tehsil, rendering thousands homeless, numerous livestock killed and devastating the entire infrastructure of Uri Tehsil. Army at once commenced the rescue and relief work providing first aid, medical evacuation, food, water, rations, shelter and transportation. Army assisted the local population in every conceivable manner to re-build their homes and lives, thereby strengthening the bond between Army and local population. The memorial is a real tribute to the 671 earthquake victims in Uri Tehsil. The names of these victims are engraved on the memorial. The memorial will bring the Army and civil population together and will be an important landmark event in enhancing the spirit of `Jaawan aur Awaam, Aman hai Muqam’.
The inaugural function was attended by about 500 locals and civilian dignitaries. The GOC in his address emphasized that the earthquake memorial is a tribute to the solidarity between Awaam and Jawaan and will go a long way in cementing further the bonds with the people of Uri.
