| Pak troops’ build up: PM meets service Chiefs; CCS takes security assessment | | | Agencies New Delhi, Dec 26: Amidst reports about a steadily growing troops build up across the border in Pakistan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday held meeting with the three service chiefs to review the security situation. The high-level meeting convened at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) was also attended by National Security Advisor MK Narayanan.
In the meantime, the Cabinet Committee on Security has convened a meeting to assess the state of security in the country.
The meeting between Dr Singh and service chiefs at the PMO is believed to take into account the level of preparedness in the armed forces.
Indian armed forces already are on a state of high alert, especially all the air bases. Notably, today’s meeting was the second one between the PM and the service chiefs within a week.
The meet gains importance in view of the heightened activity by Pakistan armed forces on the eastern front with reports today pointing to the fresh movement of troops towards the LOC and the international border. Moreover, all Army leaves have been cancelled, reports claimed.
The Pakistan Army's 10th Brigade has been moved to forward areas in Lahore and Army's 3rd Armoured Brigade, normally held in reserve, has been moved to Jhelum, the defence sources said claiming that there was a heavy concentration of Indian troops on the border.
The Pakistan Army's 10th and 11th Divisions have also been put on high alert and these forces have been stationed in areas facing Rajouri and Poonch sectors of Kashmir.
Even Pakistan Air Force has been on high alert with sorties being carried over key cities and important installations.
Earlier, Defence Minister AK Antony had also met the three service chief on December 18 and carried out a detailed evaluation.
The recent round of war talks and the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan started after the latter failed to act on terror elements operating from its territory.
However, Prime Minister Singh had dismissed the possibility of war as a solution to the crisis. Even Pak PM Gillani had also brushed aside reports that war is impending but added that his country was nevertheless prepared for that eventuality too.
