| 800 killed in road mishaps this year | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 26: As many as 800 people lost their lives and more 6000 injured in various road accidents in first ten months of this year.
This shocking revelation was made by authorities here today in a meeting chaired by the Governor NN Vohra on streamlining traffic. The Governor expressed serious concern over the growing number of road accidents and called for strict enforcement of the various road safety regulations in the State.
Reviewing the measures being taken for checking the menace of accidents, at a meeting held here this afternoon, the Governor noted with anguish that 800 persons had died and 6,200 injured in various road accidents till October this year, in the State.
Vohra particularly made a mention of the accidents taking place in the hilly areas of Doda and Poonch belts and directed that strict vigil should be maintained to check overloading, condition of the vehicles and fitness of the drivers.
The Governor stressed the need for effective preventive measures for checking such mishaps and specifically called for extensive checking of the licenses of those operating the passenger and other vehicles on the State roads.
The meeting discussed various measures for streamlining and regulating the traffic movement in the State besides taking other preventive steps to check accidents.
The Governor was informed that the Border Roads Organisation has erected 4,500 crash barriers on various roads while another 4000 such barriers are in the pipeline. For this purpose nine roads have been identified and the BRO is tasked to take up the parapets or protection barriers on five roads. Mr Vohra suggested widening of roads at sharp curves to avert accidents.
On the National Highway from Srinagar to Jammu, digital boards are being fixed at Qazigund, Jawahar Tunnel, Ramban, Batote and Nagrota for displaying the status of the road.
The meeting discussed various issues like the deployment of Motor Vehicles Inspectors, creation of the Road Safety Fund, identification and rationalization of various routes, training of drivers, fitness of vehicles, driving licensing system, punitive action for erring drivers etc.
The Governor stressed the need for close and effective coordination between the various agencies handling roads including the Transport and Traffic Departments.
The meeting was attended by the three Advisors of the Governor, H H Tyabji, Dr Sudhir S Bloeria and C Phunsog, Financial Commissioner, Works, Samuel Verghese, Principal Secretary Home, Khursheed Ahmed Ganai, Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda, Principal Secretary to Governor, B B Vyas, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, udhanshu Pandey, IGP Traffic, Dr S P Vaid, Transport Commissioner, Dileep Singh and other senior officers of various departments.
