| HM expanding terror operations | | Salahuddin can clearly strike at will | | B L KAK NEW DELHI, SEPT. 16: Intelligence agencies have intercepted more than 100 satellite telephone conversations betwen Hizbul Mujahideen operations in India and Pakistan. The excat contents of the intercepted conversations have not been officially divulged. However, according to informed sources, despite the talk floated by the Hizbul Mujahideen supremo, Salahuddin, in favour of peace talks, there is suficient evidence with the government of India in conection with the Hizbul Mujahideen's plans to expand its terror operations. These sources say that a fresh infiltration into Jamu and Kashmir is being planed by the Hizbul Mujahideen. Salahuddin reportedly aims to send 250 Hizbul operatives into Kashmir before winter sets in. Large quantities of Kalashnikovs and grenade and rocket launchers are also expected. The intercepts reveal that anearly 1,000 porters have been commissioned for the job.
The Union Home Ministry is examining intelligence reports about the Hizb's exact strength in different parts of Kashmir, which include Kupwara and Baramula in the north, Pulwama and Anantnag in south of Srinagar and Poonch and Udhampur just beyond the Kashmir Valley. With more than 1,700 armed and a 1,000 unarmed Mujahideen, Salahuddin, though operating from Pakistan and Pakistan ocupied Kashmir (PoK), can clearly strike at will.
Sources said that the Home Ministry was also in the possession of inputs vis-a-vis the number of armed and unarmed mujahideen in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir. According to these inputs, Kupwara accounted for 145 armed and 89 unarmed mujahideen as against 244 armed and 147 unarmed Islamist strikers in Baramulla sector. Pulwama accounts for 186 armed and 132 unarmed mujahideen as against 233 armed and 148 unarmed rebels in Anantnag. As police and security as well as intelligence agencies have already confirmed the existence in Jammu region of groups of militants and foreign mercenaries, the Hizbul Mujahideen, too, has, over the years, managed to entrench itself in parts of Ponch and Udhampur districts. Poonch accounts for 124 armed and 60 unarmed mujahideen as against 179 armed and 94 unarmed mujahideen in Udhampur sector. If intelligence reports are to be believed, there seems to be a sustained pattern in the way Hizbul Mujahideen operates and this may be yet another attempt to buy time only to launch fresh attacks yet again. After a 6-year lull, the Hizbul Mujahideen has been found sending out vibes that it is ready to talk to New Delhi. But a set of latest intelligence reports clearly suggest that the Hizbul Mujahideen is actually expanding base. =====================
