1/3/2023 11:26:50 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 3: In wake of the deadly terror strikes in frontier Rajauri that left at least half a dozen persons dead on January 1 and 2, the government is all set to revive the Village Defence Committees “in a time bound manner.” The sources said a formal meeting in this regard would be held in the national capital soon and that apart from the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha would be attending crucial meeting.
Sources said the meeting would fix the modalities for the formal implementation of the counter insurgency scheme in Jammu and Kashmir in a phased manner.
Sources said the demand for VDC has gained momentum following issue raised by the terrified residents of Rajauri in the wake the terror strike in the frontier district on the new year.
Sources said the Jammu and Kashmir administration has already assured the protesters of meeting their demands on priority.
In March 2022, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had given a nod to the formation of Village Defence Groups (VDGs) in Jammu and Kashmir.
A senior police official said the need for re-organising and rejuvenating village defence committees (VDCs) was being mulled for long and termed the VDC members as soldiers without uniform ‘indispensable’ in combating Pak-sponsored terrorism. He said VDC would empower the villagers for safety.
Its pertinent to mention that during peak of terrorism in the 1990s, 4,125 VDCs existed in J&K. The VDCs, as per the security experts, play a significant part in assisting the forces in counter-terrorism operations, maintaining vigil over inimical elements and assisting in maintaining peace.
The sources said the need for VDCs geared momentum in the wake of spike in terror strikes and infiltration bids in Jammu region in particular.
Pertinently the dynasts had abandoned by the VDCs.
