| Story of the year: | | SMS service restored | | MUNISH GUPTA Jammu, Dec 27: The New Year is here and people are eager to greet their dears and loved ones. It is an apt festive gift that the state Government has lifted ban on Short Messaging Services and the BSNL has become first cellular service provider to restore services nearly five months after they were suspended on August 4. As SMSes become a crucial part of the modern life driven by technology, the restoration of this service at New Year eve certainly comes as story of the year. With the poll process already over and Amarnath land row no longer an issue, people wishing that the authorities concerned lift the ban on SMS before the New Year have been finally listened to. “We have restored the services immediately after getting order from the Home Department of the Government”, said AK Mittal, General Manager BSNL. Other cellular operators were yet to respond till filing this report. It needs to be mentioned that After the Amaranth agitation and subsequent pro-freedom mass protests, the state government this July banned the circulation of SMS citing the move was necessary to check unscrupulous elements from misusing them and 'spreading rumor to widen the communal divide and aggravate violence.' The government order to curb the SMS circulation was lifted by the High Court and subsequently the government moved to apex court to challenge the high court orders. The Supreme Court of India on August 5 allowed the state government to continue banning SMS messages. Later, again the apex court's single bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan on August 25 extended its earlier order suspending the High Court ruling, which had lifted the state government's prohibitory order on SMS messages. The state government had contended that the high court had failed to appreciate the "drastic need" to hold back the circulation of SMS messages, which were being misused by antisocial and communal elements to spread rumours, to widen the communal divide and aggravate violence. The government order to revoke SMS service ban comes three days after the completion polls under the staggered seven phased poll calendar by the election commission of India. Counting for the 87-assebly segments to decide the fate of as many as 1353 candidates is being held tomorrow Now with the start of the services I will send greetings to all by just pressing the button of my mobile phone and that too cost only a few buck” says Rohan, a marketing executive. I am Very happy with the start of the services Ruhi Sharma, a junior doctor, who misses the service. Said that now “We could SMS in case of any emergency when we were not able to get in touch with people due to the poor network. Radhika a student said that she is really very happy with the restoration of SMS services as New Year is also approaching now I Can send messages to all my friends and relatives.
