| Islamabad succeeds in hoodwinking Delhi | | | NIRBHAY JAMMUAL
Today the message from Pakistan is clear."we will thwart any Indian attack."Another message :"we are ready to go in for war if attacked."The next day's message is "we do not want war against India."Islamabad,on one hand, says that it is not in favour of war on the other it has moved war planes to the forward areas after bringing them out of the hangars. It has moved additional troops on the LOC.It has deployed regular troops on the International Border in the Jammu sector, yet it says it is against war. On day one former Pakistan Prime Minister,Nawaz Sharif causes embarrassment to Islamabad when he says Kasab is a Pakistani national. He wants the Zaradri led Government to initiate tough measures against those agencies that engineered terrorist strike in Mumbai.Next day he poses to be innocent and ignorant about the antacedents of Kasab. He feigns ignorance on the issue that Pakistan sponsored Mumbai terrorist strike. In an act of balance he wants Delhi to substantiate its charge of Pak involvement in Mumbai strike with documentary evidence. He does not stop here.He wants Pakistan to take action against those whose involvement in the terrorist strike is fully established by Delhi.Pakistani political leaders seem to be wiser than those in Delhi. How ?The Indian news television channels have been telecasting day in and day out Kasab's disclosures regarding the plan on terrorist strike in Mumbai that was prepared in Pakistan but it is now no longer mandatory for Islamabad to accept his disclosures as a gospel of truth after Islamabad has refuted the allegation that Kasab was a Pakistani national. That too after Kasab's father recognised his son.Pakistani security agencies arrested four Indians on charge of masterminding the recent bomb blast in Lahore. They were dubbed as Indian agents and one of them was declared as a man from the Indian mission in London.India rubbished it but Islamabad stood to its charge even after a caller from Wazaristan told a newspaper that his outfit had been behind the Lahore blast. Well give credit to the establishment in Pakistan that by building war hysteria it succeeded in befriending Nawaz Sharif who had started, despite lending support to the PPP led Government, berating President Asif Ali Zardari and other ruling leaders. If it is words of war between India and Pakitan it is truce,no matter if it is temporary, between Zardari and Nawaz Sharif.Atleast till the war clouds hover over the LOC Sharif may not venture to launch vituperatives against Zardari.and if Pakistan took the liberty of hoodwinking India it was the result of the politics of hiccup pursued by Delhi.Delhi bungled after the Mumbai strike. It announced that it had the right to strike militant bases in Pakistan if Islamabad did not act to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure. It built up a situation which could convince the political gazers that India was about to attack Pakistan. It did so only after the US leaders endorsed India's right to defend itself against Pak machinations. And the same American Government did nothing to force Islamabad to act fast against terrorists. It simply issued sermons to the Government in Islamabad. When India started buckling under the offensive postures of Pakistan Delhi had no other option but to approach the Saudi and Chinese leaders with the request that they mount pressure on Pakistan to desist from buidling war hysteria. This itself indicates that India was neither for war nor is in favour of armed conflict with Pakistan.Possibly Islamabad knows it and hence it started exhibiting offensive postures which it thought could force India to suspend its plan of attacking Pakistan. As far as the air and ground war machinery is concerned India is much ahead of Pakistan. But Delhi is against any war and that too during the period when the world suffers the pangs of economic depression. But if Delhi wanted to utilise war hysteria for gains in the Lok Sabha elections, due in early next year,it has lost that advantage because by now the opposition, which had supported the UPA Government as far dealing with Pakistan is concerned, seems to have realised that the Congress has lost the political gamble. |
