Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 8: International medalist and Ace Fencer of J&K UT Shreya Gupta gave an excellent display of fencing in the world cup which is being held at Budapest, Hungary from 7th to 8th January, 2023. Shreya Gupta who is getting training at Budapest, Hungary for last last 3 months on a Target Olympic Podium Scheme(TOPS) of Govt. of India, was the only Women Sabre Fencer from India to clear the pools in individual matches and reached knock out stage. In the pools, she defeated Hungary Fencer by 5-3 and France fencer by 5-4 besides defeating Romanian fencer by 5-1 in one sided match. The other women fencers from India viz. Kritarthi Kotwal of J&K, Baby reddy and Gauri of Telenagana failed to qualify the pools besides giving their best efforts.
In the men’s individual matches only Yuvraj, Laishram Morabba and Yuvi Walia could qualify the pools thereby reached knockout stage whereas other contenders Lakshaya Sharama, Mayank Sharma and Suryansh Sharma from J&K gave their competitive performance but could not qualify for the knockout stage. As per Shreya the ongoing training camp at Hungary and playing in world cups at various destinations is helping in improving her game tremendously and this shall be beneficial for her in future events. Competing with world class fencers is a great honour for us. She expressed her gratitude to Sports Authority of India and TOPS scheme of Govt. of India which is giving lot of exposure and confidence to athletes. President, J&K Amateur Fencing Association, Sh. M.J.Sharma congratulated Shreya for coming up with splendid performance and hope she will win medals for country and J&K in future at international and national events.
