| Women fail to break 1972 record | | ONLY 3 IN HOUSE | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 29: Apart from shattering the dream of as many as 1266 candidates, the assembly verdict could not favour the fairer sex contestants with 36-year-old record for highest number of women legislatures lingering unchanged. The assembly elections which recorded the highest number of 1353 candidates had also the highest number of women candidates with 67 in total, and were more than double from the previous polls when only 29 women participated in the battle for supremacy. The outcome of hung assembly for the second consecutive term for the 87-member assembly segment also made clear that the women legislatures in the state assembly has to wait, for future elections, to break even the highest number of women in the state assembly of 1972. While the number was appreciable when compared to previous elections, yet only three could make to the assembly and that too all from Kashmir valley with two from south Kashmir and the one is from the heart of the city. Peoples Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti trounced her nearest male counterpart of National Conference to erect the flag of success in what was considered as alien place for her, the Wachi assembly segment in Shopian district of south Kashmir where she fought for the first time in her political career. Another women winner is from Noorabad, a neighboring constituency to Wachi but she is from PDP's rival party, the National Conference. While Mehbooba defeated NC candidate, Sakina Itoo was too good for former cabinet minister of Peoples Democratic Party, Abdul Aziz Zargar. Another fairer sex contestant created history in its own right and was the first to win from the all dominated constituency of Kashmir by non-Muslims. Shamima Firdous of National Conference won from Habba-kadal assembly constituency in Srinagar to make it to the assembly. It was in 1972 that four women were elected to the legislature, which still remains the highest figure for women MLAs in the state. Zainab Begum, Hajra Begum, Shanta Bharti and Nirmala Devi made it to the Assembly on congress ticket. Three women contestants participated in the first phase out of total 102, similarly two women contested in the second phase with 79 other candidates. Likewise, in the third phase of polls on November 30, out of the 71 contestants there were five women candidates. During the fourth phase of elections, on December 7, out of the 256 contestants in fray, the number of women contestants was 10 while out of a total of 179 contestants for fifth phase, there were again five women contestants. In the sixth phase on December 17, a total of 271 candidates were in fray which included 11 women whereas in the seventh and final phase of elections, out of 393 candidates, there were highest number of women and 31 of them contested, even though 30 went on to lose. |
