Don’t encash pain of victims | | | Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to all television channels against reporting incidents of accidents, deaths, and violence including violence against women, children and elderly in manners which grossly compromise on good taste and decency. It has been observed that news channels by showing the visuals of accidents, dead bodies and violence are creating a bad taste and people don’t like it. The advisory issued by the Information and Broadcasting ministry is a step in the right direction. One can understand that the media’s job is to report the incidents and keep the people aware about the happenings but this can be done by maintaining sanity and respecting the boundaries of the victims. It’s not necessary to show the gory images. Television channels are usually watched by families in households with people from all cohorts – old aged, middle aged, small children, etc., and with various socio-economic backgrounds. So it’s the responsibility of the broadcasters to follow the programme and the advertising code. One can understand that TRPs are an important factor for news channels to run but these channels have to bear in mind that they cannot stoop low for the sake of TRPs. Due to social media becoming popular, many videos are taken directly from various online platforms and these are broadcast without editorial discretion and modifications. The advisory issued by the Union Ministry for Information and Broadcasting is a warning to the news channels that if they keep on airing the unedited clips, it can lead to the ministry acting tough against these channels. The people running the news channels are thorough professionals and one expects them to follow all the rules and norms, and respect the privacy of the victims. People running the media houses should remember that common masses expect them to be morally upright and straightforward. They cannot use the pain and sufferings of people to make their channels popular. The government is monitoring these news channels and if they don’t fall in line, stern action like taking these channels off air could be looked into. One hopes that the news channels would implement the advisory issued by the I&B Ministry in letter and spirit and would ensure that the plight of victims is not highlighted for the sake of TRPs. |
