During his visit to the Police Headquarters, here this morning, the Governor express high appreciation of the State Police and the Central Police Forces for steadfastly tackling the serious disturbances in the Jammu and Kashmir regions during the summer months. Vohra referred to the volatile situation caused in the backdrop of the Amarnathji land row and said that the topmost priority was to restore the order and to preserve the communal harmony. Having achieved this objective, the next immediate challenge was to create a conducive environment for the impending elections to the State Assembly and, "I am happy that we fully achieved our objective, thanks to the sustained efforts of the State, the District and Divisional Administration and, above all, the strong cooperation of the people". The Governor also lauded the role of the Police in tackling militancy and referred to the successes it had achieved in conjunction with the Security Forces and the Army in the past six months. As a result of well-coordinated efforts, he observed that the level of militancy related violence had substantially dropped this year. He, however, said that this should not leave any room for complacency, in view of the continuing threats from the terrorist networks, several of which were receiving strong support and encouragement from across the frontiers. Vohra referred to the measures being taken at the national level for tackling terrorism and said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Intelligence set-up too will have to gear up for playing a key role within the State and in effectively supporting the initiatives being taken by the Central agencies in tackling the grave threats of terrorism. In his address, the Director General of Police, Mr Kuldeep Khuda, said that the just concluded incident-free elections would go down in the annals of history in golden letters. He said that the massive participation of the people in the election process reflected their deep faith in the stable security environment. Khuda said that the 2008 elections were, by and large, almost peaceful, compared to the 2002 Elections when 220 civilians and 148 Security Forces personnel were killed. The Director General of Police also apprised the Governor that the militancy-related incidents had sharply declined, for the first time, this year. Khuda expressed the gratitude of the Police to the Governor for his interest in the development of the force and welfare of the personnel. Director General of Police, CID, Dr Ashok Bhan, also lauded the dynamic leadership of the Governor to the State Administration, the Police in particular. On this occasion, senior police officers, including Inspector Generals and Deputy Inspector Generals of various wings, besides the Principal Secretary to Governor, Mr B B Vyas, were present on the occasion. |
