Srinagar, Jan 13: Amid moderate to heavy snowfall on higher reaches during the past few days, State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has issued a 'high danger' avalanche warning for the people living above 2000 meters sea level in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
An avalanche with HIGH danger level is likely to occur above 2000 meters of north Kashmir districts of Bandipora and Kupwara districts in the next 24 hours. Both the districts including higher reaches received moderate to heavy snowfall during the past few days resulting in closure of several far flung roads with the district headquarters.
The official said that an avalanche with MEDIUM danger level is likely to occur above 2000 meters over higher catchments of Baramulla in north Kashmir and Gander in central Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
The possibility of an avalanche with ?LOW? danger level is likely to occur above 2000 meters over south Kashmir district of Anantnag, Kulgam and Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch and Ramban regions of Jammu division districts in the next 24 hours, they added.
Two labourers working with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) executing the work on Zojila Tunnel on the strategic Srinagar-Leh highway were buried under a huge avalanche that occurred at Sonamarg-Baltal route at Sarbal area in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district on Thursday.
People living in these areas have been advised to take precautions and avoid venturing in the avalanche prone areas.
