Political parties in quandary
1/16/2023 11:26:26 PM
Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir are eagerly waiting for the announcement of election dates. Politicians are hoping that polls will be held soon so that they can make a comeback.
The last assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014 after which Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came together to form a coalition government in the erstwhile state. However, the BJP pulled out from the PDP led government in 2018 and since then political scenario in Jammu and Kashmir has changed completely.
The abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, led to complete integration of J&K with the Union of India and it ended the chaos and confusion that prevailed for 70-years.
Soon after the erstwhile princely state was divided into two Union Territories, J&K and Ladakh, the government announced the formation of Delimitation Commission to redraw the parliamentary and assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. The Delimitation Commission completed the task that was assigned to it and ended the injustice with the Jammu region, and brought it par with Kashmir vis-à-vis distribution of assembly seats.
Whenever assembly elections are held in Jammu and Kashmir it won’t be easy for any Kashmir based traditional party to form the government as Jammu has got the equal representation. No party will be able to form the government on its own.
The emergence of new political parties has also made things difficult for the political formations which called the shots for the seven decades. Kashmir based parties that used to threaten to stay away from the elections are desperate to jump into the poll fray as they have realized that staying away from the political scene has turned them irrelevant.
Politicians are aware of the fact that they can no longer keep their flocks together if the elections aren’t held. They know that polls are must for their existence.
The Government of India has dropped enough hints about assembly elections will be held later this year but till now no specific date has been announced. Political parties in J&K have been caught in a difficult situation and the leaders of these parties are trying to find the ways and means to somehow tell the people that they exist.
