| PDP’s Jammu account significant, NC maintains region-wide presence | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 30: The National Conference which has been the only party with representation in almost all the districts across the state is still maintaining its presence in terms of vote percentage of not seats but the Peoples Democratic Party has a made a difference by making significant inroads in Jammu region. Two candidates have won on the PDP ticket –Choudhary Zulfikar Ali from Darhal and Rafiq Hussain Khan from Mendhar –at Rajouri the party lost for a wafer thin margin of little over 400 votes and at two other constituencies its candidates polled more than 10,000 votes. National Conference maintained its 2002 tally of nine seats –with gain of one and loss of one seat –in Jammu region but at seven places in the region it has been a runner up. Noteworthy to mention is Suchetgarh constituency where NC candidates polled more than 10,000 votes and the Congress candidate –who was Minister in coalition government –lost his security deposits. In terms seats, however, the National Conference has been completely wiped out from five of the ten districts in Jammu province –Kathua, Jammu, Doda, Ramban, Udhampur. The BJP which had just a single seat of Nagrota in the previous Assembly has not only been able to retain it but has won from Kathua and Reasi districts also. Apart from winning Bani, Basholi and Hiranagar constituencies in Kathua, district the party has opened its account in Reasi district also where it won the Reasi seat defeating the former minister and senior Congress leader Jugal Kishore Sharma. In Jammu district alone, the party has won Jammu East, Jammu West, R S Pura, Suchetgarh, Marh and Raipur- Domana seats, besides retaining Nagrota seat defeating former minister and National Conference leader Ajatshatru Singh. Barring Samba district, the Congress has won from all the remaining nine districts of Jammu region. It won one seat each from Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur and Kishtwar districts and three seats from Jammu district. It also won all the four seats in twin districts of Doda and Ramban. The party suffered major reserves in Jammu district when it lost eight seats and won only three seats of Gandhinagar, Akhnoor and Chammb. While the former Deputy Chief Minister and senior party leader Mangat Ram Sharma was defeated in Jammu West constituency, the former minister Mula Ram was defeated from Raipur-Domana constituency. Mangat Ram Sharma scored just around 16,000 votes and remained at third position this time. Those who retained their seats included Raman Bhalla from Gandhi Nagar constituency, Tara Chand from Chammb and Shyam Lal Sharma from Akhnoor constituency. The PDP which was limited to the valley in the previous elections, has for the first time, made its presence felt in Jammu region, by wining Darhal seat in Rajouri district and Mendhar in Poonch district. The major sufferer in this election; however, has been the National Conference which has been completely wiped off from Jammu, Kathua, Ramban, and Doda districts. In Jammu district where the party had won a single seat of Marh in the 2002 elections lost it to BJP this time when its former MLA and Provincial President Ajay Sadhtora was defeated by Sukhnandan, a little known candidate from BJP. The NC this time won one seat each from Kishtwar, Samba and Reasi districts while it failed to get any seat from Doda, Kathua, Ramban and Jammu districts. However, the party won two seats of Kalakote and Nowshera in Rajouri district and Poonch Haveli in Poonch district. The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party has also failed to make its presence in other districts of Jammu region and its base remained limited to two districts of Udhampur and Samba. From Udhampur and Ramngar its erstwhile candidates Balwant Singh Mankotia retained their seats while its candidate from Chennai lost to Congress candidate. However, Yash Paul Kundal, has succeeded in retaining the seat from Samba constituency. The Jammu State Morcha (P) which has been fighting for reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir with Jammu as a separate state has failed to make any headway and has been restricted to the solitary seat of Bishnah where its candidate Ashwani Kumar Sharma retained the seat. Similarly, the Kathua seat which was previously won by Babu Singh, who had contested as an independent candidate in 2002 elections and later joined Congress party was again won by an independent candidate Charanjit Singh defeating his nearest rivals Chaudhy Lal Singh, former minister and sitting Congress MP and former minister Babu Singh. Babu Singh who was denied the ticket by the congress party contested election as an independent this time but lost.
