| Who will be leader of opposition? | | | EarlY Times Report Jammu, Dec 31-Who will be the leader of the opposition in the Assembly after the PDP has been forced to sit in the opposition? PDP circles today said that the matter has not been decided yet. Since Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has not been showing interest in regular participation in the proceedings of the House, three PDP MLAs have emerged as the front runners for the post of leader of the opposition. They are the PDP Chief, Mehbooba Mufti, former Deputy Chief Minister, Muzaffar Hussain Baig and senior party vice President, Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari. The Party General Secretary, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, said "the issue has not been discussed yet. The Party Chief will take the decision in consultation with senior PDP leaders after the new House was constituted." However, indications are that the dice will have to be cast between Mehbooba and Muzaffar Hussain Baig. Both these leaders have the acumen to keep the Congress-National Conference Government on the tenterhooks. As far as the conception of parliamentary proceedings is concerned, Baig has an edge over Mehbooba. As a well-known constitutional expert Baig can cause embarrassment to the ruling coalition on the floor of the House. The only minus point is that Baig remains usually down with the problem of migraine which had not allowed him to undertake vigorous pre-poll campaign in Baramulla constituency. Mehbooba is highly articulate, which is her forte, for becoming the leader of the opposition. But reports indicate that she may contest the Lok Sabha election from Anantnag constituency and if she does so she may not be interested in the post of leader of the opposition.
